Francis Marion Davis

Francis Marion Davis, son of Jesse and Melvina Greenwalt Davis, was born February 24, 1879, near Carlinsville, McCoupin county, Illinois. He came to Elk county, Kansas, as a young man. He was united in marriage with Viola E. Bright, daughter of Mary E. and Hi Bright, on December 24, 1905. To this union was born one son, Kenneth I. His wife passed away March 10, 1913, when Kenneth was but two months old.

Frank, as he was always called, then went to California, where he lived a few years. On March 4, 1919, he was united in marriage to Lillie B. Armstrong, who has been his constant aid and companion through the years. To this union were born twins, Walter Lester and Mamie Louise.

He had spent most of the past fifty years near Howard, where he had been a diligent farmer, always mindful of his family, their welfare; his livestock and his crops. Nine years ago they bought a home in Piedmont and since resided there. For the past two years he had been an invalid, cared for constantly by his devoted wife, until her health failed. The past month was spent in a nursing home in Eureka, where he was given every care possible and where he quietly passed away at 6:30 a.m., November 9, 1954.

He leaves to mourn his passing his faithful wife, who is a patient in the hospital in Eureka at the present time; his three children, Kenneth I, Walter Lester, and Mrs. Marvin Stewart, all of Howard; one granddaughter; one grandson, and one sister, Miss Jessie Davis, also of Howard; and a host of other relatives and friends. He had long been a member of the First Baptist church of Howard.

Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 15th, conducted by Rev. Austin McGhee of Severy. The casket bearers were Holly Miller, Edd Goodnight, Harve Clark, Horace Copeland, John Heater and John Wells. Burial was in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.

Lille Bell Armstrong Davis

OBITUARY---DAVIS
Lille Bell Armstrong, youngest child of Mary Catherine and Sterling Thomas Armstrong, was born March 28, 1890, at Independence, Missouri. She moved with the family to Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, when two years old and to Elk County, Kansas, when three years of age. She had lived in and around Howard most of the time since, Where she did practical nursing for a number of years.

On March 4, 1919, she was united in marriage to Francis Marion Davis. To this union were born twins, Mamie Louise and Walter Lester. She also reared her step-son, Kenneth Irvin Davis. She became a member of the Christian church of Howard in early life and has retained her membership there, although she had attended at Piedmont for the past nine years. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Fred and Lee Armstrong: two half-brothers, John William Armstrong and Arthur G. Young, and her faithful husband, who passed away just six months ago on November 9th.

Nine years ago, because of their failing health and declining years, she and her husband left the farm and moved to Piedmont, where she had since resided. She had been in frail health for several years and was in the hospital at the time of her husband's passing, but was later able to go to the home of her daughter, where for four months she was lovingly cared for. Then desiring to return to her own home, she was taken back to Piedmont for a short while. Three weeks ago she became quite ill and was again taken to the hospital at Eureka, where she quietly passed away at 7:30 a.m., on May 12th. She leaves to mourn her departure her two children, Walter Lester Davis and Mrs. Louise Stewart; her son-in-law, Marvin Stewart; her grandson, Howard Lee Stewart; her step-son, Kenneth Davis, and family; one sister, Mrs. Ruther Dunlap, of Pico Rivera, California; one brother, Homer Armstrong; nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15th, conducted by Rev. Kincaid, minister of the Christian church of Piedmont. The singers were Mrs. Walter Baughman, and Mrs. Willard Morss, with Mrs. Adron Hebb accompanist. The casket bearers were Robert Armstrong, Howard Armstrong, Russel Armstrong, Albert Armstrong, Rex Armstrong and Ralph Armstrong. Concluding services were in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.

Wiley Michael Friend

OBITUARY -- FRIEND
Wiley Michael Friend, son of Thomas Benton and Elizabeth J. Friend, was born September 23, 1877, in Henry County, near Clinton, Missouri and departed this life August 26, 1963, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 3 days. He had been ill for several years and seriously ill since last December. Since June 11 he had been in the state hospital suffering from the lung disease, emphysema and on August 23 had an acute heart attack and pneumonia developed. He was the fourth child of a family of six boys and three girls, whom are all living. His parents preceded him in death.

When a young man he came to Lebo, Kansas with his parents in a covered wagon. In 1896 they moved to a farm near Severy, Kansas. On December 25, 1906, he was married to Gertie Richardson and lived on a farm near Severy until moving to his farm north of Howard in 1912. To this union were born five children, three daughters and two sons. Mrs. Ethel Criger, Mrs. Violet Hebb, Mrs. Della Cox, and Vern Friend, all of Howard, and Forrest Friend, who preceded him in death in 1928. His main interest was his children and he was always willing to help his neighbors when needed.

He leaves to mourn his passing his three daughters and one son; one daughter-in-law, Florence; two sons-in-law, clad Criger and Millard Cox. One son-in-law, Martin Hebb, preceded him in death. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; five brothers and three sisters, George, Charley, Roy, Chester, Addie Friend and Flossie Allensworth of Centralia, Oklahoma; Will of Vinita, Oklahoma, and Ella Traw of Buckner, Missouri; many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all of his loved ones, neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Spurrier-Watt Funeral Home, Howard, Kansas, August 29, 1963, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dean Brown of the First Baptist church officiating. Music was presented by a quartet composed of Fred Finley, Jess Barger, Charles Miller and Paul Moore, accompanied by Mrs. Elwood Miller. Casket bearers were, Walter Baughman, Estil DeWitt, Albert Criger, Glenn O. Miller, Roy Miller and Carl Hubbell. Interment was in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Kansas.

Forest Herbert Friend

OBITUARY Forest Herbert Friend, was born 6 miles north of Howard, Kansas on March 16, 1923 and passed from this life in the Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 10, 1928, age 4 years, 11 months and 23 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Friend, 3 sisters, Ethel, Violet and Della and 1 brother, Vern, all of whom are at home. Funeral services were held at the home north of Howard at 4:00 p.m., Monday, March 12th. Burial was made in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

FLORENCE LOUISE FRIEND

FLORENCE LOUISE FRIEND died Thursday, November 29, 1979 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louise Havens, in Winfield, KS. She was 68 years of age. She was born on October 12, 1911 in the Howard Township of Elk County, KS to Homer J. and Rozella Poole Armstrong. Florence attended school at Pleasant Hill 149 north of Howard, and attended Sunday School at the New Salem Baptist Church. On August 4, 1932 she was united in marriage to Jesse Vern Friend in Eureka, KS and to this union was born three sons and two daughters. Florence lived her entire life in Elk County, making a home for her family on farms in the Howard area. In 1977 Florence and Vern moved into Howard where they retired.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Jolly Neighbors Quilting Club. She faithfully attended these activities as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Howard, and one sister, Mildred. She is survived by her husband, Vern; three sons, Melvin of Elk Falls, KS, Harold of Howard, and Arthur of Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Barber of Wichita, and Mrs. Louise Havens of Winfield; one brother, Ralph Armstrong of Derby, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Woods of Howard, 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 1979 in the Zimmerman Funeral Home with Rev. Don Harper of the First Baptist Church of Howard officiating. The music was provided by Louise Morgan who sang, "Beyond the Sunset" and "Ivory Palaces" with Mrs. Robin Smith as the organist. The casket bearers were Bill Marion, Elias Morgan, Ruel Penhorwood, Vance Shipman, Roland Vick, and Cleland Wells. Interment was held in the Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard.

Martin Lewis Hebb

HEBB---Martin Lewis Hebb, youngest son of James and Naomi Smith Hebb, was born August 14, 1906, on the home farm near Howard, Kansas, and passed away at his home in Howard, Kansas, December 24, 1951, after a lingering nerve illness of many months. Martin received his education at Wild Cat school and the Moline High School. He had spent his entire life in Elk county with the exception of two years that he spent in Iowa and South Dakota.

Martin Hebb and Miss Violet Friend were united in marriage in 1932. They lived on his mother's farm for several years, then moved to Longton and later to Sedan, Kansas. They moved to Howard in the present home in 1945. He engaged in the trucking business and was very popular with the public. To this union were born four children: Alice Marie and James Martin of Wichita; Naomi Lucille and Shirley Maxine of the home. Besides his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his passing his father and mother of Howard; one brother, Manley Hebb, of Fall River, Kansas. His only sister preceded him in death on December 15, 1943. There are many nephews, nieces and many other relatives and a host of friends also surviving.

He was a loving son, a good father and a very kind considerate man. His friends were numbered by all who knew him. He was a member of the Baptist church, having joined in 1948 with the rest of his family. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Howard. Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, December 27th. conducted by Rev. Frank H. McKinney, pastor of the Howard Baptist church. Music was furnished by Jess Barger, Fred Finley, Virgil Munsinger and Charles Miller, with Mrs. Willis Miller accompanist. The casket bearers were Jim Barnaby, Wesley Indermill, Milo Ingle, Ralph Perkins, Ern Nix and Fred Gors. Interment was in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Kansas.

VIOLET HEBB

HOWARD--Violet Elizabeth Hebb, 87, longtime resident of Howard, died May 1, 1998, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

Servies will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Marty Dewitt will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery. A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home. Hebb was born March 9, 1911, southeast of Severy, to Wiley Michael and Gertie (Richardson) Friend. She attended Lower Paw Paw rural school and grew up in the Severy and Howard communities. On Feb. 17, 1932, she married Martin Lewis Hebb in Independence. He died in December 1951.

A homemaker, she had lived in Longton and Sedan but resided in Howard most of her life. She was employed for several years at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline and later at the Howard Senior Center. Hebb was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, James Hebb, Gresham, Ore.; three daughters, Alice Ramsey, College Station, Texas, Lucille Knight, Hamilton, and Shirley McGill, Forks, Wash.; a brother, Vern Friend, and two sisters, Ethel Criger and Della Cox, all of Howard; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.

Edward James Morris

OBITUARY Edward James Morris died at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, KS Tuesday, February 23, 1971, where he had been a patient for five days.

He was born in Douglas County, Missouri, December 31, 1896. He moved with this parents to Greenwood County, Kansas, at the age of 15. Later the family moved to Elk County, where he spent most of this life in or near Howard engaged in farming.

On February 13, 1918, he was married to Alice Poole in Howard. He was a member of the Christian Church. Retiring in 1953, he and his wife moved into Howard, where he served as night watchman for 11 years.

Survivors, in addition to his widow of the home, are four sons, Willard of Winfield, Eugene of West Covina, California, Lewis of El Dorado and Chester of Wichita; four daughters, Mrs. Edith Shipman of Howard, Mrs. Ruth Hedges of Severy, Mrs. Coretta Webster of Howard and Mrs. Dorothy Goss of Wichita; two brothers, Virgil of Camp Creek, Alberta, Canada and Otha, Henton, Canada; Five sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Wiley of Vernon, B.C., Canada, Mrs. Jessie Rollens of Victoria, B.C., Canada, Mrs. Alberta Cole of Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Emma Des Georges of Salem, Oregon, and Mrs. Mary Morris, Salem Oregon; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted at the Spurrier Chapel, Howard, KS, Friday, February 26, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Clarence Brooks of the First Christian Church officiating. Music was presented by Mrs. Curtis Morgan, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Robin Smith at the organ. Casket bearers were Fern Brougher, Clem Portenier, John West, Lewis Chamberlain, Elgie Fickle and Clarence Lister. Concluding services and interment were in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.

Alice Poole Morris

Alice Poole Morris died at 11:00 p.m., July 3, 1977, at her home in Howard, KS. She was born in Elk County, October 21, 1898. She was the daughter of John Franklin and Florence Poole. She lived all her life in the community of Howard.

On February 13, 1918, she was married to Edward James Morris, who preceded her in death on February 23, 1971. She was a member of the Christian Church and American Legion Auxiliary. She spent her life as a loving mother and wife.

She is survived by eight children: Mrs. Edith Shipman of Howard, KS, Mrs. Ruth Hedges of Severy, KS; Mr. Willard Morris of Winfield, KS; Mrs. Coretta Webster of Howard, KS; Mr. Eugene Morris of Covina, Calif.; Mr. Lewis Morris of Howard, KS; Mr. Chester Morris of Wichita, KS; and Mrs. Dorothy Goss of Wichita, KS. Twenty-two grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; cousins of the vicinity; two nieces of Howard, KS; and one nephew of Derby. She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, one grandson, and one nephew.

Services were conducted in the Spurrier Funeral Home Chapel, Howard, KS, Wednesday, July 6, 1977 at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Harry S. Justvig of the First Christian Church officiated. Music was presented by Mrs. Curtis Morgan, soloist and accompanied by Mrs. Robin Smith at the organ. Casket bearers were the grandsons. Concluding services and interment were in Grace Lawn Cemtery, Howard, KS.

LEWIS MORRIS

Lewis Glenn Morris, 58, died June 3, 1991, at his home in Howard. Born July 4, 1932, near Howard, he was the son of Edward James and Alice (Poole) Morris. He attended rural Elk County schools at Wildcat and Bunker Hill and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1950. On March 23, 1956, he married Ruth Irene Lister at Howard.

Morris was employed by Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita for many years, and the Morrises operated the Howard locker for several years. He served with the Navy during the Korean Conflict (1951-1955). The couple resided in El Dorado from 1962 until returning to Howard in 1974. Morris was a member of Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 at Howard, Fred Priesley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1174 at El Dorado, and the First Christian Church at Howard.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Jon and Randy Morris, both of El Dorado; three brothers, Willard Morris of Winfield, Eugene Morris of Covina, Calif. and Chester Morris of Wichita; three sisters, Ruth Hedges of Severy, Coretta Webster of Howard and Dorothy Goss of Wichita; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home, with interment in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. The Rev. Robin Haines will officiate, and military grave side rites will be conducted by Carter-Rader Post 149. A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

EDITH LUCILLE SHIPMAN

Edith L. Shipman, 64, former Howard resident, died Friday in El Dorado. Born near Howard on Aug. 14, 1919, she was the daughter of Edward and Alice Poole Morris.

On August 29, 1941, she was married to Mervin Shipman and he preceded her in death in 1974. Mrs. Shipman was a lifelong resident of Howard until moving to Knutson Manor Nursing Home in El Dorado in February 1983. She was a member of the Christian Church of Howard.

Survivors include two sons, Dale of Coffeyville, Dallas of Glendale, Ariz., two daughters, Delores Hallman of Winfield, Deborah Faulkner of El Dorado; four brothers, Willard Morris of Winfield, Eugene Morris of Covina, Calif., Lewis Morris of Howard, Chester Morris of Wichita; three sisters, Ruth Hedges of Severy, Coretta Webster of Howard, Dorothy Goss of Wichita; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with the Rev. Paul Harding officiating. Interment was in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard.

William Royse

Mr. William Royse was born February 4, 1837 in the state of Indiana, and departed this life October 15, 1919 at age 82 years, 8 months and 11 days. He united in marriage with Miss Frances Russell in Mercer County, Missouri, March 15, 1859. To this union were born the following children: Jeptha Royse, Mrs Florence Poole and Mrs Mary Ealy, all of Howard, Kansas and Mrs. Sarah M. Barnes of Gage, Oklahoma and the following who have preceded their father into the other world, Lottie and Fred E. Royse and Lily DeWitt. Fred E. Royse having died only a few days before his father. Mr. Royse has lived in this community for almost forty years and was highly respected by all. He was also, for all this time, a member of the Christian Cresco Church, and was faithful to the church of his choice.

Funeral services were conducted from his late home Thursday afternoon, October 16, by Rev. Harry E. Crane, pastor of the First M. E. Church of Howard, and interment was made in the Cresco Cemetery.

George Austin Royse

LONGTON -- George Austin Royse, 88, longtime resident of Longton, died Sept. 24, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Longton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard. A memorial has been established with the Longton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Royse was born March 2, 1914, in Hooker, Okla., to Ethel Pearl (Small) and Fred Eugene Royse. He attended rural school near Hooker before moving to the Elk Falls area with his family in 1924.

On May 10, 1938, he married Mable Grace Sprague in Sedan. Royse was a farmer and stockman in the Longton and Elk City area most of his life. His wife died June 7, 1980. On Feb. 22, 1982, Royse married Ruth Osborn in Springfield, Colo. They made their home on a farm northwest of Elk City until moving to Longton in 1987. Royse had been a resident at the nursing home since January. He was a longtime member of the Longton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Royse, Longton; three daughters, Jean Elda Miller, Lee's Summit, Mo., Mildred Beiter, Coffeyville, and Ethel Holloway, Elkhart, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Lyneva Bryan, Herington; a sister, Edith Sprague, Shawnee; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.


OBITUARY-Flint Hills Express

George Austin Royse passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002 at the Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline. He was 88 years of age and a long time resident of Longton. He was born on March 2, 1914 at Hooker, Okla. to Fred Eugene and Ethel Pearl (Small) Royse. George attended rural school near Hooker before moving to the Elk Falls area with this family in November of 1924.

On May 10, 1938, he married Mable Grace Sprague at Sedan, and to this union were born three daughters, Jean Elda, Mildren and Ethel. George was a devoted husband and father, and was a farmer and stockman in the Longton and Elk City area throughout his life. Grace preceded him in death on June 7, 1980.

On Feb. 22, 1982, he married Ruth Osborn at Springfield, Colo. They made their home on the farm northwest of Elk City until moving to Longton in 1987. George has been a resident of the Elk Manor Nursing Home at Moline since January of this year. He was a long time member of the Longton United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Longton; his daughters, Jean Elda Miller of Lee's Summit, Mo., Mildred Beiter and her husband Jim of Coffeyville and Ethel Holloway and her husband Tom of Elkhart, Ind., his step-daughter, Lyneva Bryan and her husband Steve of Herington, Kan.; his sister, Edith Sprague of Shawnee, Kan.; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; his parents; two brothers, Hugh and Darrell and a sister, Lois Harris.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Longton United Methodist Church with Pastor Burt Santee officiating. Joan Baughman was the pianist with Licia Nichols singing "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross". The casket bearers were Jim Beiter, Tim Cook, Roger Graves, Tom Holloway, Travis Miller and Bill Sprague. Interment was held at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Longton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Hugh Eugene Royse

MOLINE - Hugh Eugene Royse, 90, longtime resident of Longton, died June 30, 1999, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. A memorial has been established with the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation. Contributions may be left at the funeral home. Zimmerman Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Royse was born Aug. 30, 1908, on a farm near Howard, to Fred Eugene and Ethel Pearl (Small) Royse. In 1913 the family moved to Oklahoma where he attended rural school. In January 1924 the family returned to Kansas in a covered wagon. They made their home near Elk Falls until moving to Longton in 1927.

On April 30, 1930, he married Mary Susan Lewis in Elk Falls. They made their home on a farm near Longton for many years. In 1946 he became employed at the Elk County Highway Department and worked there until he retired in 1957. He entered Elk Manor Nursing Home on March 19 of this year.

HARMON HAROLD (BILL) WOODS

HARMON HAROLD (BILL) WOODS, of rural Longton, KS died on Wednesday, September 25, 1963 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, KS. at the age of 57 years, 7 months and 14 days. He was born on Feb. 11, 1906 at Fair Play, MO., a son of Oscar and Ida Frances Davis Woods. He was one of a family of seven children, of which there were five boys and two girls. He was reared on a farm near Fair Play, Missouri and graduated from Bear Creek, Mo., High school.

Always an industrious, honest and courageous young fellow, he left home at the age of 22 and came to Elk County, KS in 1928. He went to work for Wes McCoskey and while there he met and fell in love with a neighbor girl, Gladys Armstrong, and they were married on January 27, 1934. They lived on farms near Howard until 1946, when they moved to the Longton vicinity. That same year they adopted two young girls, sisters, whom they welcomed into their home and hearts as their very own. They educated these daughters and the oldest one, Shirley Ann, is married and has given them two grandchildren. The youngest one, Anna Mae, is at home with her mother.

Bill, as he was called by his friends and neighbors, was an outstanding citizen. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Longton; president of the Longton Free Fair; vice president of the Kansas Wolf and Fox Association; a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 26, AF & AM; the Eastern Star, Order No. 282; a director of the Kansas State Fair board; member of the Longton Chamber of Commerce, the Cove Grange No. 1919 and the Elk County Livestock and Cattlemen's Association. As a neighbor, he could be called upon at any time to assist in any needed project.

Surviving are his widow Gladys; two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Kim of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Miss Anna May Wood of the Home; two brothers, Lewis of Bolivar, MO, and Leonard L. of Rozel; a sister Mrs. Lala Hammons, Fair Play, MO. and two grandchildren. Services will be held Friday in the Spurrier-Watt chapel in Howard with Rev. Dean Brown of the Howard Baptist church officiating. Casket Bearers will be George Barnes, Joy Jackson, Gilbert O'Dell, Howard Baughman, Everett Moore and Ed Henry. Interment will be in Grace Lawn cemetery at Howard.

Gladys Olive Woods

Gladys Olive Woods, 81, of Howard, died July 21, 1991, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, KS. Born Dec. 8, 1909, near Howard, she was the daughter of Homer J. and Rozella (Poole) Armstrong. She attended rural Elk County schools and graduated from eighth grade at Pleasant Hill School northwest of Howard.

On Jan. 27, 1934, she married Harmon Harold "Bill" Woods at Howard. The couple farmed north of Howard until moving to a farm in the Longton area in 1946. Two years after her husband's death in 1963, she moved to Howard. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Carter-Rater Post 149 at Howard, Longton Chapter No. 282, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Longton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Kim, of Wauipai, Hawaii; a brother Ralph H. Armstrong, of Derby; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, with interment in Grace Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Harriett Bechtle, Longton United Methodist Church, will officiate, Helen Vinette will be the organist and Louise Morgan will be the vocalist. Casket Bearers: Richard Fish, Harold Friend, Melvin Friend, John Havens, Ruel Penhorwood and Robert Woods.

ANNAMAE (MRS. DAVID) RICHARDSON, 40, of 1738 S. Green, died Wednesday. Service 11 a.m. Saturday, Downing and Lahey Mortuary, 2:30 p.m., Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard.

VERA TOON

WICHITA -- Vera Ruthelia Toon, 86, of Wichita, formerly of Moline and Howard, died May 1, 2004, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Pastor Merle Toon will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

Toon was born Sept. 13, 1917, at Moline, to Dora (Goss) and Elbin Orlando Lewis. She attended school and lived her early years in the Moline community. On June 23, 1934, she married Jack Toon at Fredonia. They lived in Fredonia, Howard, Moline and Augusta before moving to Atlanta in 1965. She made a home for her family in the Atlanta community during most of her life. In 1987, she began living with her daughter and recently lived in Dodge City before moving to Wichita. Toon was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge of Moline and the Moline United Methodist Church. Her husband died in 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Tommy Toon, Tulsa, and Merle Toon, Arkansas City; a daughter, Patsy Foster, Wichita; a brother, Wilbur Lewis, Akron, N.Y.; a sister, Majorie Armstrong, Dover, Ark., 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Dallas E. Webster

HOWARD---Dallas E. Webster, 76, died Dec. 13, 1993, at his home in Howard. Born Jan. 29, 1917 at Howard, he was the son of Walter C. and Maude E. (Biddinger) Webster. He attended High Hill rural school and graduated from Howard High School in 1935. After serving with the U.S. Army during World War II, he farmed in Elk County. On Jan. 20, 1951, he married Coretta A. Morris in Howard. Webster was a member of the First Baptist church, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association and Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149.

Survivors include his wife, of Howard; a son, Doug Webster, a daughter, Diane Webster, and a brother, Harold Webster, all of Wichita; a sister Mary Barnes, of Howard; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Zimmerman funeral Home at Howard with burial in Grace Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Chuck Evans will officiate, and military rites will be conducted by Carter-Rader Post 149. Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
