FREMONT J. CHAPIN

One of the active young men who landed in Oberlin in the spring of 1879 was Mont Chapin who homesteaded a piece of land he still owns about 9 miles west of Oberlin. He worked at various things, working for H. O. Douglas several years in his livery barn, going on drives in those days as far as Buffalo Park, Kirwin, Indianola and Red Cloud. Mont was the first catcher of the Oberlin ball team and stood right up behind the bat without glove, mask or chest protector and the enlarged joints on his fingers are eloquent witnesses that there were foul tips just as hard to manage as those today. Chapin has always been a hard worker and has one of the best divide farms in the west part of the county. A few years since he erected a fine residence where he lives with his wife and five children. Mont has taken the HERALD from the first issue and is considered by the management as one of its staunchest supporters.
