LAURA MILLER DOUGLAS

Thirty years is a long time and to tell in a short article what it would take pages to faithfully portray need not be expected. Laura Miller came to this county when every thing was so new it seemed a complete transition from the old home in Ohio to the plains of western Kansas. In those times everybody rode horseback; the tough little ponies of those days were marvels of speed and endurance and girls and boys used them almost universally as means of travel. Miss Miller early became an expert horseback rider and from her fathers ranch in the western part of the county knew every bridal path and trail for miles around her fathers home. Louisa Van Cleave, now Mrs. W. D. Street, was her intimate chum and comrade on many of these riding excursions. They chased the festive jack rabbit on the plains; ran races and altogether enjoyed those free and happy days, perhaps as well as they do today in their better environments. Mrs. Douglas has every reason to feel proud of her beautiful home over which she now so ably presides.
