Marian E. Cathcart

One of her hopes was to live past Jan 1, 2000, so she could say she had lived in 3 different centuries-1800, 1900, 2000!  She overshot that goal a little living until June 2, 2002

Marian E. Cathcart

Marion Ellen Cathcart was born June 13, 1899, at the farm home of her parents Grant C. and Lenora (Cantrall) Cathcart in Harlan Township, Decatur County, Kansas. She passed away Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin at the age of 102.

  Marion grew up in Harlan Township and attended grade school at the rural schools there. She attended and graduated from Decatur Community High School with the Class of 1918. Marion also graduated from business school in Illinois.

  She returned to Oberlin and worked as a secretary at Decatur Community High School for about 20 years. During WWII Marion worked in Topeka and McCook, Nebraska. In 1963, she moved to Boulder, Colorado, where she lived until returning to McCook in 1994. In 1999, Marian became a resident of Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin. Marion was a member of the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, rural Decatur County. During WWII, she composed and mailed about 300 newsletters to Decatur County Servicemen. Her hobbies included reading, genealogy, and keeping up on the graduates of DCHS and WWII servicemen.

  She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, Clyde, and Shirley; four sisters, Bessie Mae, Alice Herzog, Ruth Wolf and Grace Heller.
