EARLY BIRTH RECORDS OF

LYON COUNTY, KANSAS

1885 - 1892

Volume 1

In the late 1800's and early 1900's vital records in Kansas were kept on a county basis. It was not required by the State of Kansas until July 1911. The vital records, including births, for Lyon County were recorded in three oversized books. Undoubtedly, there are births in Lyon County that were not recorded in the vital record books.

The first volume contains births recorded in Lyon County between October 25, 1885 to January 10, 1892. The record for each birth can contain the following information: Name of Child, Sex, Race/Color, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, No. of Child of Mother, Father's Name, Father's Nationality, Father's Birth Place, Father's Age, Father's Occupation, Name of Mother, Maiden Name of Mother, Residence of Mother, Mother's Nationality, Mother's Birthplace, Name and Address of Medical Attendant, Name and Address of Person Making Certificate, Certificate Returned By and Date of Return.

The complete extract for all these is in a publication "Early Birth Records of Lyon County, Kansas Volume 1" and is available for purchase from the Flint Hills Genealogical Society for $30.00, plus $3.00 postage. Kansas residents add $1.92 sales tax. {Visit our Publication Web Site for more information}. A copy of the page from the publication containing a specific record is available from FHGS for $1.00 donation plus a stamped, self-addressed envelope. A copy of the page from the actual record book is available from The Lyon County Historical Society, 225 E. Sixth, Emporia, KS 66801.
