EARLY DEATH RECORDS OF LYON COUNTY, KANSAS

VOLUME 2

January 7, 1892 to December 9, 1899

In the late 1800's and early 1900's, vital records in Kansas were kept on a county basis. (It was not required by the State of Kansas until July 1911). The vital records for Lyon County were recorded in three oversized books. While specific information was to be recorded, it did not always happen. In addition, not all deaths were recorded as evidenced by comparing these records to the newspaper indices done by Robert "Bob" Hodge and cemetery burial records.

The second volume contains deaths recorded in Lyon County between January 7, 1892 and December 9, 1899. The record for each person can contain the following information: Name of Deceased, Age, Sex, Color, Marital Status, Cause of Death, Occupation, Nativity, Place of Death, Duration of Disease, Complication, Duration of Complication, Date of Death, Father's Name, Birthplace, Mother's Maiden Name, Birthplace, Return Made By, P. O. Address and Date of Return. NOTE: If the record does not contain complete information regarding a death and/or burial date, an approximate date has been noted in parenthesis based on the surrounding records.

A copy of the page from the actual record book is available from the Lyon County Historical Society, 225 E. Sixth Street, Emporia, KS 66801. Please send a donation (to cover copy fees and researchers time) plus a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope). Please be specific in your request as to the type of record you are requesting, name of decedent and date of death.

We would like to thank the Lyon County Historical Society for giving the Flint Hills Genealogical Society permission to publish and post this information on the Internet.
