First the Flint Hills Genealogical Society would like to THANK Robert "Bob" and Lois HODGE for allowing us to share their wonderful indices on these web pages. It is a resource that has helped many Lyon County Researchers, and will continue to help many in the years to come.

Microfilmed copies of the Emporia Gazette are housed at the Emporia Public Library, Emporia State University, Kansas State Historical Society, and a few "EARLY" issues can be found at the Lyon County Historical Society. You can view this at all of the above locations and you can make copies as, they all have microfilm copy machines.

If you are unable to visit the places listed, you can order the microfilm from the Kansas State Historical Society on Interlibrary loan, for use in your local library. They usually loan FREE of charge, and you will have about 1-2 weeks to read the microfilm before it is to be returned. {CLICK HERE for Interlibrary Loan Information}. They will make copies, subject to their usual reference services policy which is $10.00 fee for out-of-state, plus cost of copies.

You can write to them at:

Kansas State Historical Society

SW Sixth Ave

Topeka, KS 66615-1099

The Emporia State University will also loan out the microfilm on interlibrary loan. You will need to contact your local library for information on how to order it in for you. This is important, as some of the special rolls, can only be obtained from them. (refer to previous page)

The Emporia Public Library will also make copies for you. Their usual fee is $10.00 an hour, plus copies. You can write to them at:

Emporia Public Library

110 E. Sixth Street

Emporia, KS 66801

The Flint Hills Genealogical Society will also make copies, we do ask for a donation to cover the cost of copies and postage. Donations are used for the enhancement of the Genealogy Collection at the Emporia Public Library, as well as promoting Genealogy and Lyon County Family History.

You can request any amount, but the more you request the longer it might take to get them. It may take 3 to 8 weeks to get them copied and mailed to you. Research is done on a first come first served bases. Mail your request, along with your donation to us at:

Flint Hills Genealogical Society

P. O. Box 555

Emporia, KS 66801-0555

When requesting 1 - 3 copies, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. If you have any questions before requesting copies or need assistance in determining an appropriate donation, email us at:

The Kansas State Historical Society ask for only one FULL NAME request at a time. The Emporia Public Library and the Flint Hills Genealogical Society will handle most any size request, but if it is large it might take some time to fill, as each obit is mostly like on a different roll of microfilm. It is suggested that you limit your requests to about 15 obits at one time. It is better to make 2 or 3 requests, than one LARGE one. The Emporia Public Library staff is limited to the amount of time they can spend on research, and the Flint Hills Genealogical Society has VOLUNTEERS doing their research. Please be sure to put down all the newspaper information from the indices, FULL name, Name of the newspaper, date of paper, and page/column information is that is on the index. This will help the researcher find it faster for you.
