Did you know that the book, "Little House on the Prairie" is actually set in Montgomery County? The Ingalls family lived here just two years before Pa "got the wanderlust" and moved the family to Minnesota, which is chronicled in the next "Little House" book, "On the Banks of Plum Creek." In fact, the land on which they settled in Montgomery County was Osage Indian land and not for settlement at that time.
On the Rutland Twp. 1870 census at the bottom of the page you will find Ma, Pa, Mary and Laura enumerated. Don't forget about Baby Carrie on the next page! It shows that Caroline Jr. was born just that April in Kansas.
