The Museum’s Start

In January 1994, Vernon Mickey donated Mickey’s Museum to Sheridan County, the Historical Society was appointed caretakers of the collection. Many artifacts had been collected by Vernon and Isabelle Mickey telling the story of the county.

The main building of  the museum complex was built in 1963, a replica of an early-day hardware store.  Vernon furnished it with old display cases and merchandise as they did in the family’s original store building of Mickey Hardware. Vernon received many donations to his unique collection. While he was taking in the historical artifacts, Isabelle began collecting dishware. Between both collections one building proved to be inadequate so another was constructed. Both buildings now house displays featuring artifacts representing the history of Sheridan County and its unique residents.

Bee Hive Schoolhouse

In 1983, the Bee Hive Schoolhouse from the Studley area was moved to the museum grounds. The schoolhouse is set to give the visitor an authentic experience of a one-room schoolhouse on the plains. The school district was in session from 1897-1953, using this building for a majority of those years. Though the country school is a thing of the past the memories linger on. While you are in the school you can not help but hear the stories being told by the artifacts that have watched countless students reach new heights.

Future of the Museum

We are currently in the process of discovering “new” and exciting artifacts in the collection. We are making educational displays and exhibits to help stimulate public interest and increase the appreciation of history.
