Butler County is located in the south central part of Kansas. It was one of the original counties established in 1855, and named for Andrew Butler, a Senator from South Carolina who was one of the authors of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Butler County is bordered on the northwest and northeast by Marion and Chase counties (respectively); to the east and southeast by Greenwood and Elk Counties; to the south by Cowley County; to the southwest by Sumner County; to the west by Harvey and Sedgwick Counties. It's county seat and largest town is El Dorado. With a population (2006) of more than 63,000 residents, Butler County is the 8th largest county in Kansas in population.
