Johnson County is located in the northeastern part of Kansas, on Missouri's border. It was one of the original counties, established in 1855. The county is bordered on the north by Wyandotte County; the east and southeast by Jackson and Cass counties in Missouri; Miami and Franklin counties to the south and southwest; and Douglas and Leavenworth counties to the west and northwest. Historically, the Oregon-California and Santa Fe trails passed through Johnson county, since they originated in nearby Independence, Missouri. There were many conflicts between the Pro-Slavery and Free State people before and during the Civil War. Johnson County was mostly rural until early in the 20th century, when communities such as Overland Park and Mission Hills were developed as suburbs of Kansas City. Overland Park is Johnson county's largest city, and Olathe is the county seat.
