Leavenworth County is located in the northeastern part of Kansas and shares a small part of its border with Missouri. It was one of the original counties formed in 1855 by the territorial government, and was named for Fort Leavenworth, which in turn was named for Henry Leavenworth, an officer in the War of 1812. Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827 by Col. Leavenworth. Leavenworth county is bordered by Platte County Missouri to the north; Wyandotte and Johnson counties to the east and southeast; Douglas County to the southwest; and Jefferson and Atchison counties to the west and northwest. Leavenworth is it's largest city, and the county seat.
