Riley County was one of the original counties established by the Kansas Territorial Legislature in 1855, and was named for General Bennet Riley, a general in the Mexican-American war. Riley county is bounded on the northeast and east by Marshall and Pottawatomie counties; to the southeast and south by Wabaunsee and Geary counties; to the south and west by Geary and Clay counties; and by Washington county to the northwest. Manhattan is the county seat and largest city in the county.
