Mansfield, Emmer: "Prominent Colored Man Killed While Repairing Tire on Road.” Paul Jones, Discharged of Charges Before Examining Court. "Charges against Paul Jones, growing out of the death of Emmer Mansfield, were dismissed by Judge J. R. White at the examining trial yesterday morning. Owing to the large crowd that attended the hearing it became necessary to use the Circuit Court Room. "J. E. Mansfield, one of our most useful and influential colored men, was almost instantly killed last Friday night, when he was struck by a car driven by Paul Jones, a well known citizen, and connected with some of our best families. It seems that Mansfield had a flat tire and stopped and while stooped over fixing the tire Mr. Jones, who was coming from the Fair, struck Mansfield with his car, knocking him under his own car and in some way his neck was broken causing practically instant death. A Coroner's jury was empanelled which brought in the following verdict: "We, the jury, find from the evidence that J. E. Mansfield, colored, came to his death by being hit by a car driven by Paul Jones, and knocked under the said Mansfield's car and in the fall some way said Mansfield's neck was broken, near C. H. Hatchett's residence. /s/ W. C. Pritchard, R. D. Matthews, Henry J. Bowles, J.S. Redford, J. T. Cloyd, C. E. Graves. Attest: W. M. Watkins, Coroner, Barren County Kentucky. "Mansfield was about 60 years of age, a leader among his people and was a leading member of the Baptist Church and active in all of its work. He was a member of the firm of Mansfield Bros., contractors, who have done a vast amount of work around town. He was absolutely reliable, and his untimely death will be a serious loss to his relatives and his race, ad well as to Glasgow, for he was a live wire and very useful to this community. "The Colored Baptist Association was in progress in Glasgow and Mansfield was very active in the work and had two colored preachers in his car when the accident occurred. "He leaves his mother, Aunt Lou Mansfield, 86 years old, his wife and one brother, Bud Mansfield." Burial Barlow-Mansfield Cemetery. * Source: Unknown Glasgow KY J. E.

TALBOTT CALDWELL, an old colored man, was drowned in the Bradford mill ford of Beaver Creek last Friday evening. He was returning from mill when his horse fell in the creek. The waters – running swiftly from recent rains – swept him off his feet and he was washed down the stream some distance before going under the last time. Mr. Charley Boles was attracted to the spot by the cries of those who  witnessed the occurrence. He sprang into the creek and searched around the spot where Talbott was last seen to sink, but to no purpose. Several Negro men standing around were entreated to save him, which they could have easily done – the water being but about heart deep. They utterly refused to go into the water. The drowned man was old, decrepit, and inform which, of course, contributed so little to the ease with which he was drowned. The remains were recovered Sunday about noon.
