The Whaley Family in Kentucky: Tracing the Census

Jesse R. Whaley

Submitted by Alice Warner; 6/25/2007

Jesse R. Whaley was African American, as was his whole family. He must have been a former slave of the Whaley family in the area. I don't know anything at all about this family except what I get out of pure records but I will put those down as I find them. What is interesting is that a black man has a family and a self-run household in 1850 in KY.

In 1850 he appears on the census as a 22 yr old male, born in KY with a wife Mary born in KY and 22 yrs old, and a daughter, also Mary, 2 years old, born in KY. His occupation is Labourer. -- District 2, Bourbon Co., KY

In 1860, He is listed as 33 years old, born in KY, but his wife Mary born in KY is 26 years old. The children are not listed in age order as is usual on the census. The children would put this Mary as giving birth at a very young age. This must be another wife or something. He has the following children in his household: Caroline, age 9 F, George age 12 M, Catharine age 13 F, Wesley age 3 M, Rawley age 6 M, and Jessie age 4 M. Caroline and George had attended school within the year. ALL were born in KY. -- Ruddles Mills, Bourbon Co., KY.

In 1870 Jesse is listed as Mulatto and his wife as black.  He is 39 yrs old and his wife Mary is 38. All are born in KY: the children are Mary, 20 F, George 19 M, Jesse 15 M, Joseph 8 M, Jerry 5 M, Henrietta 4 F. An idiotic farm labourer, William Stevens, age 26, was living with the family. His race is unknown.

In 1880, he is 53 Years old, born in KY and now his wife Mary J is born in KY age 53-- fits better with the 1850 census. This census is very difficult to read, especially the names of the children. It appears that he has living with him: Geo. age 29 M (not son), Henry, 24, son, Joe, 18, son, Jerry, 15, son, and John, 8, son. -- Bourbon Co., KY

I cannot find him on the 1900 Census.
