Deed - Hiram Conway to Dudley B. Conway

Filed in Book 55 at page 283 of the Deed Records of Mason County, Kentucky

September 1, 1846

Deed - Hiram Conway of Mason County, State of Kentucky, to Dudley B. Conway of the same.

“2 Negro girls named Frances and Margaret and their increase and one Negro man named Charles.”

Being the interest Hiram Conway derived under the will of John Conway, deceased, recorded in Will Book M, Page 354, Mason County, KY.

 

Deed - Henry Grimes to Andrew M. January

Recorded in Book 55 at page 220 of the deed records of Mason County, KY

April 24, 1846

Henry Grimes conveys to Andrew M. January a certain Negro man named William, about 33 years old and of black complexion.

It is understood that January is to emancipate William at the expiration of 7 years from this date.

William Bradford relinquishes all right, title and interest in and to William to which he may be entitled by mortgage and gives his consent to the sale.

 

Release of Mortgage - Henry Grimes to William Bradford

Recorded in Book 55 at page 204 of the deed records of Mason County, KY

May 5, 1846

Whereas I, William Bradford of the County of Adams, State of Ohio, hold a mortgage on a certain Negro girl named Mary, about 13 years old, dark complexion, which said mortgage was given to me by Henry Grimes on October 15, 1841. Now in consideration that Henry Grimes has sold said Negro to Richard Willett and the proceeds of said sale are paid over to me, I do hereby release said mortgage upon said Negro and relinquish and convey to said Willett all right, title and interest I have in said Negro girl by virtue of said mortgage.

 

Deed of Trust - John M. Morton to Henry Waller

Filed in Book 55 at page 86 of the deed records of Mason County, KY

September 25, 1845

Deed of Trust from John M. Morton to Henry Waller, both of Maysville, KY. Conveys “two Negro slaves, Thornton, mulatto, aged about 35 years and Edmund, black, aged about 16 years”, in trust for John M. Duke, Peter Lashbrooke, and William R. Wood, who are securities for John M. Morton for a note to the Maysville Branch of the Bank of Kentucky.


Mortgage - Eli Keene to R. H. Stanton

Filed in Book 55 at page 76/77 of the deed records of Mason County, KY

March 14, 1846

Mortgage of Eli Keene to R. H. Stanton, both of Mason County, KY, conveys the parcel of land on which Eli Keene now resides and also one mulatto girl named Ann, about 11 years of age.

 

Mortgage from Eli Keen to Robert Blanchard and Henry Reeder

The date of this mortgage was August 19, 1845.

Filed in Book 54 at Page 365 of the deed records of Mason County, KY.

Mortgage of Eli Keen of Mason County, KY to Robert T. Blanchard and Henry R. Reeder, also of Mason County.

"my negro girls, Caroline and Sarah Ann, now in the possession of the said Robert T. Blanchard, the former about 17 and the latter about 14."

August 21, 1846

This seems to be a renewal of the previous mortgage dated August 19, 1845, and mentions:

"two negro girl slaves named Caroline and Sarah Ann, now in the possession of Robert T. Blanchard, the first about 18 years old and the latter about 15 years old."
 

 

Indenture of Edward Smith

Filed in Book 55 at page 76 of the deed records of Mason County, KY

March 9, 1846

Edward Smith is made apprentice to John N. Ganter for 3 years from December 4, 1845. He is to be taught the trade of a weaver and dyer.

 

Deed of Trust - Edward Claybrooke to James B. Claybrooke

Filed in Book 55 at page 59 of the Deed Records of Mason County, Kentucky

February 26, 1846

Edward Claybrooke of Mason County, KY, for and in consideration of the natural love and affection he bears to his daughter, Mary L. Baldwin, wife of Edmund Baldwin, also of Mason County, conveys to James B. Claybrooke of Mason County in trust, a negro girl named Caroline, aged about 19 years, for the sole benefit of his said daughter, Mary L. Baldwin, and, after her death, to be held by the said trustee for the exclusive use of Edward Claybrooke’s granddaughter, Mary Baldwin, a child of his daughter, Mary L. Baldwin, and also the exclusive use of his great granddaughter, Mary Louiza Peck, who was a daughter of Lerelda Peck, the latter of whom was a daughter of his said daughter, Mary L. Baldwin, to be enjoyed after the death of said daughter, Mary L. Baldwin, in equal proportions, and in the case of the death of either of them, the survivor to take the whole. In case both his said granddaughter and great granddaughter should die without lawful issue, then the said slave and her increase is to revert and come back to Edward Claybrooke’s estate and to go to his proper heirs.

 

Mortgage - Aquilla W. Sampson to Hord, McIlvain, Davis & Daulton

Filed in Book 55 at page 48 of the Deed Records of Mason County, Kentucky

February 5, 1846

Mortgage from Aquilla W. Sampson of Maysville, KY, to Francis T. Hord, John B. McIlvain, Otho Davis and Thomas Daulton, the said parties having become Sampson’s security to the Maysville Branch of the Bank of Kentucky. Sampson conveys to the above parties “two Negro girl slaves. One of the said slaves is a mulatto girl named Milly, aged about 10 years, and the other is a black girl named Hannah, aged about 6 years.”

 

Deed of Trust - Lomax Cammack to Wm. H. Robertson

Filed in Book 55 at page 29 of the Deed Records of Mason County, Kentucky.

November 21, 1845

Whereas Edward Robertson, my father-in-law, shortly after my marriage to his daughter, Dolly, gave to my said wife several Negro slaves, male and female, who have since increased and are, with their increase, named as follows:

Beverly, Squire, Carlisle, Mary, Dilse, Dolly, Elijah, Harriet, Ann, Lewis, Agnes, and America

and are now in my possession, and by law belong to me absolutely, since there was no deed of trust made by said Edward Robertson to my said wife, and whereas arrangements have been now made by the surrender by my wife of her land which had been deeded to her by her said father by which all my debts will be certainly paid and I left free and unembarrassed in the full ownership and possession of the above named slaves and as I am now anxious to secure these slaves to my said wife and our children. Now therefore, in consideration of the surrender which my wife has made of her land to the payment of my debts, and of the great love I bear her and my children, I have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell, alien, release and convey all my right, title and interest in and to said slaves to Dr. William H. Robertson as trustee for the use and benefit of said wife, Dolly Cammack, and our children. And my said trustee shall have full power to control and manage the said slaves for the purposes aforesaid, free of any authority or claim of mine. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ____ day of November, 1845.

Release of Mtg. - Caleb White to Samuel K. Sharpe and Everett Stillwell


Filed in Book 55 at page 11 of the Deed Records of Mason County, Kentucky.

May 20, 1845

Whereas Caleb White of Maysville on January 8, 1845, executed a mortgage to Samuel K. Sharpe and Everett Stillwell on a negro boy named Alfred, which mortgage has now been fulfilled, Sharpe and Stillwell hereby release all claim to said negro boy.

Filed in Book 55 at page 6 of the deed records of Mason County, Kentucky:

December 15, 1845

Mortgage - James B. Dobyns to Rawleigh O. Chinn, both of Mason County, conveys a negro man named Joseph Settle for $650.

Also refers to a previous deed dated November, 1845, whereby James Dobyns mortgaged to Rawleigh O. Chinn a negro man named Mason.

 

Mortgage - James Alexander Keith to John A. Keith

Filed in Book 54 at Page 425 of the deed records of Mason County, KY.

Mortgage - James Alexander Keith to John A. Keith:

"a certain negro man slave named Wesley, aged about 37 years"

 

Apprenticeship of Alexander Clift to Joseph T. Littlejohn

Filed in Book 54 at Page 394 of the deed records of Mason County, KY.

October 13, 1845

Alexander Clift is made apprentice to  Joseph T. Littlejohn

Pursuant to an act of the general assembly of Kentucky concerning the poor, Joseph T. Littlejohn placed with Alexander Clift for a term of twelve years from January 4, 1846. Alexander Clift is to teach Joseph T. Littlejohn the trade of a blacksmith and cause him to be taught to read and write and common arithmatic and provide him with meat, lodging and clothing during said term.
