From Handibook- Allen County Kentucky was created 11 December 1801 from Green County. The county seat is located at Scottsville, Kentucky. No records available from the courthouse before 1902.
From the Ky Gazetteer- Allen county was formed in 1815. It is located in the Pennyrile region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 445 to 966 feet above sea level. In 1990 the county population was 14,628 in a land area of 346 square miles, an average of 42.3 people per square mile. The county seat is Scottsville.
The Pennyrile region of Kentucky stretches from the Land Between the Lakes in the west across the state to the Pottsville Escarpment in the east. It is a Mississippian plateau with a large karst region that includes Mammoth Cave. The region takes its name from the pennyroyal (Hedeoma puligiodes).
