Carlisle county was formed in 1886. It is located in the Jackson Purchase region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 283 to 550 feet above sea level. In 1990 the county population was 5,238 in a land area of 192 square miles, an average of 27.3 people per square mile. The county seat is Bardwell.

Carlisle county is located in far western Kentucky along the Mississippi River. It was formed in 1886 and named for John G. Carlisle.
