Cubage--A Coal Tipple operator who quit his job earlier this week died
of a single shotgun blast to the chest yesterday afternoon. It was
apparently a suicide, officials state. the victim was identified as
Roy Wilder, 35 of Cubage. Deputy Sheriff Bruce Bennett said Sheriff
Homer Green's investigation report showed the incident occurred about
2 p.m. in front of Wilder's home three-fourths of a mile from Cubage.
Barrel at Chest
Bennett and Green and Durham Funeral Home employee Buddy Cox found
Wilder slumped over in an old Chevrolet with a 12-guage pump action
shotgun barrel at his chest and the gun stock again the front
floorboard. No note was found. County Coroner Hobart Cawood indicated
an inquest would be held today. A spokesman for the Brownies Creek
Collieries at Balkan said Wilder had worked for that mine for about
three years prior to quitting the first part of this week.
Two children
Wilder and his wife, Alice Jean were divorced. The couple had two
children, Brenda Kay and Deanna Gay. Brenda said Jewell Miracle was
the first person to reach the car after hearing the shot, Bennett
said. The car was parked in front of Wilder's home just off the
highway. Durham Funeral Home reports arrangements are incomplete.
Miracle is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hillery Wilder,
Cubage, brothers Arnold of Cubage, Lonnie of Freemont, Ohio, and
Berlon of Pontiac, Mich; Sisters, Mrs. Opal Alexander, Lawrence, Kan.
and Mr.s Zola Quintenna, Pueblo, Colo.
