NEWSOM
In the year 1900, an old family Bible of Robert T. Moore's was in the possession of Mary Louisa Blain Newsom of Caldwell Co. KY according to a Civil War document. I have tracked down one of Louisa Newsom's descendants who tells me that he believes the Bible was in the possession of Fannie Newsom when she died in Caldwell in 1977. He believes it may have been sold or disposed of with her estate. If anyone has any information about this Bible, please contact me by email or mail. This bible belonged to my ancestors and I would love to at least see what information is in it. Thanks! Rebecca Graham 5900 W. Roosevelt Dr. Milwaukee WI 53216. Tue Jul 5 23:00:51 2005

DARNALL
I am researching Thomas & Elizabeth Darnall's family. They arrived in Caldwell before 1820 and both died in October of 1840. I know the names of 8 of their 9 children. I recently discovered they have one more boy from the 1830 and 1840 census. This boy would have been born between 1825 and 1830. I am assuming that he died right before the parents did in 1840 because there is a record listing the surviving children and this boy is not mentioned anywhere. The names of the survivng children are Elijah, Mary Polly, Sarah Sally, James Madison, Caroline, Willis, David (born Sep 1824), Stallard (born in 1827). Any help in finding out more of this boy would be appreciated. Please contact me by email or snail mail. 3370 Beaver Creek Dr. Lexington, KY 40515 Wed May 18 12:53:06 2005

KILGROW/KILGORE
The earliest known progenitor of the name Kilgrow/Kilgore, Elias W. Kilgrow was married to Martha Lollar in 1939. When she died he married her sister, Jane. These sisters were from Sparta, White Co. TN. There is record of him in Caldwell CO. in 1844 and buying and selling and applying for a tavern license. We don't know who his parents were. We have come across the name of William Kilgrow in the area around Caldwell CO. starting about 1920. We believe he is a brother or even the father of Elias. We have also come across the name of Eli Kilgore who was eastablished in the Elbow Cr. area of between the rivers at least by 1812 and most likely as much as 10 years earlier. WE are looking for anyone that might have information about about any of the three named. home phone, 360-653-8557 address, 8119 83rd ave. NE Marysville, WA, 98270 email, ferrell52@comcast.net

ASHBY
Two topics: 1) regarding Rev. Stephen Ashby, and 2) looking for paid researcher Hello, I am trying to investigate a possible connection to the Rev. Stephen Ashby, who died in 1831. His will, written in 1828, is recorded on page 433 of Will Book A in Caldwell Co., KY. I am trying to determine if Sarah (UNKNOWN surname) who married a William Butler between 1814 and 1819 in KY and later moved to Alabama (Mississippi Territory) and, finally, to Texas is a daughter or granddaughter of Stephen. Stephen's will reads, in part, "I also give unto MALINDA MILLER, daughter of MARY MILLER my negro girl Mary and to my SARAH my negro Girl Nancy." The Sarah who married William Butler apparently inherited a female slave named Nancy. The Butlers and Ashbys lived near each other in Christian Co., KY ca. 1813, and William and Sarah Butler’s oldest son, b. 1819, was named Stephen A. Butler. Also, the 1810 census shows a female under 10 years of age living in the Ashby household; Sarah Butler was born ca. 1800. This is really a shot in the dark, but you can see why I’m asking! Does anyone know if there are any probate records, especially relating to the distribution of the estate ca. 1833, filed in Caldwell Co.? I would be happy to pay a researcher to look into this, and will be glad to provide what little additional information I have. Thanks so much, Carol Todd

HALBERG
My grandmother Lina (Lena) Kachelhofer HALBERG and her husband Joseph Halberg lived in Princeton Caldwell Co, KY some part of 1875-1880. Three children, Theresa, Nellie, and Fanny were born in Princeton, Ky during this time frame. In the 1880 U.S. census Lina Halberg and one child, Fanny was recorded as living in Princeton. She was listed as a widow in that census. She married my grandfather, Ernest Winter (Wintter) in 1881 in Florence, AL. No mention is made in the 1900 census of a child of the former marriage to Joseph Halberg. I believe that Joseph Halberg and two or three children are buried in or near Princeton. Is there a possibility for locating the death certificates or burial site for this family or birth records of the children? Any information will be grately appreciated. VALENTINE
I just got a death certificate for my great grandfather, Edward Valentine, who died in Caldwell Co., KY on 6 July 1945. For the city, it says he lived "rural" and lists the street as "White Sulphur." Funeral director was R.H. Morgan in Princeton. I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to see if they could find an obituary for him in a local paper. I would pay a reasonable fee for your trouble. I hope to make a trip back there next year, but I just can't wait. I had been looking for info on him for years when I finally found this death certificate, so I'm really excited. I thought I had lost track totally, as he lived most of his years in Grayson County and apparently moved to Caldwell just in the last year or so of his life. I need to prove that John E McCormick and Francis Marian McCormick were brothers..Their parents were Charles W McCormick and Susannah Hill..The problem is that no names of children were given on the census until 1850...John E was the oldest child and Francis Marian was 20 years younger..by the time names were given on the census, John already had his own wife and children so they did not appear together as siblings...Francis fought for the Confederacy, and I am trying to prove him as a supplementary..I have even wondered about obituaries or deeds, but so far I have not found them...thanks for any help. WAGNER
Hi, I am trying to find information on Charles Marion WAGNER's parents (he would be Senior aft 1920). He was born 16 Jan 1890 in Caldwell Co. and died there 23 Jul 1971. Charles' death certificate states his parents are Marion WAGNER and Isabelle STAPLES, the information was provided by Charles' wife (Abigail/Abbey DEASON). In a 1920 Christian Co., Census, he list his parents as being born in Kentucky. In a 1880 Census, Todd Co., census, there is an Isabel STAPLES listed in a family of William McKINNEY, she was listed as age 20 and being born in Kentucky also as single. This would make her birth about 1860. Then I found in Todd Co., an Isabelle WAGNER that died 16 Nov 1942, at age 82, this would place her birth about 1860. It all seems to connect that the Isabelle/Isabel STAPLES (WAGNER) is the one of the same. The problem is I have NOT been able to connect her to any marriage, and not with a Marion. Any help with This pair would be appreciated. Thank You!

David Andrew, I have been told, was seen on a census prior to 1880 in Caldwell Co., in the home of Andrew W. Traylor and Isabella Creekmur. They did say he was not listed with them in 1880. I don't know why he would be listed with the family of Andrew W. and Isabella. His parents died shortly before or after. 1915. David's daughters of which two are surviving, said that they where young when David's parents died, and they did not know them. One daughter born in 1912 other 1915. Elizabeth shows up in the 1850 census of Hamilton County, TN with their children, the oldest being John William Goodlet, my 2nd great-grandfather. My query is about Sparten's parents. I think they are Dr. John Goodlet, son of Adam Goodlet who came from Scotland to Culpepper, Virginia in the 1770's and later to Kentucky, and Rebecca Patterson, daughter of Col. Robert Patterson of PA,but I have no documented proof. I found a reference to Rebecca's obituary in a book titled "Kentucky Historical Society Microfilm Catalog, Vol II, Excerpted Newspapers and Pertinent Genealogical Material." The obituary was listed in THE COMMONWEALTH, she died on Oct. 4, 1834 in Caldwell County. It added that the newspaper was in Franklin County, KY. I received this from another List & thought it might be of interest to someone researching these families. I have NO more information. Reta Young Home Page: http://virginiaobits.homestead.com/ -------------------------------------------------- http://virginiaobits.homestead.com/vaobitsL.html DIED, on the night of the 14th inst. at his residence in Chesterfield, after a short but severe illness, which he bore with great and exemplary fortitude, Mr. Thomas Lafon, who early in life embraced the doctrines of Christianity, and became a member of the Baptist Society in Virginia, and has for many years been a preacher of the Gospel. A wife and eight children are not all that have sustained an irreparable loss in the death of this amiable man; but humanity ought to mourn, and will mourn, the death of him whose hand was ever stretch'd out for the relief of the unfortunate; and whose heart never felt a sentiment, but of universal charity and good will. As the father of a family, as a neighbour, and a friend, he stood preeminent; as a preacher of the gospel he was greatly esteemed the doctrines which he had embraced with a tenderness and fervour, that was irresistable; he rebuked with mildness; and whe he council'd, his looks more than his words possessed a kind of eloquence, that conveyed that council with force to every heart. His parting with his weeping family and friends, was a tender and melancholy one; but death had no terrors for a soul like his; even the placid smile of universal phylanthropy which ever graced his countenance while living, did not forsake it in passing through the valley of the shadow of death. Ths is not intended as a tribute equal to his merits; for to pay that, would be impossible. Not these weak lines, but thy good d____ shall tell, To after times, what now is known full well, That thou, preeminent in faith, hast trod The narrow path that leads (thro' life) to God. from the "Petersburg Republcan", Petersburg, Va., Fri., Sept. 20, 1816 issue ------------------------------------------------------------ http://virginiaobits.homestead.com/vaobitsL.html T. H. Ligon Dead. After weeks of suffering Tommie Ligon, eldest son of R. H. Ligon, passed away very early yesterday morning. The deceased had been under the bane of consumption and death was welcomed as an entrance to a better land. The funeral will take place to-day at 10 a.m. from the Methodist Church. from "The Roanoke Times", Roanoke, Va., Fri., April 18, 1896 issue, p. 2, c. 1 ------------------------------------------------------------ http://virginiaobits.homestead.com/vaobitsS.html Benjamin R. EAST
I would like any information on Mary East and John East, heads of households in Caldwell County in the 1810 census. Mary is also on the 1810 tax list for Caldwell--her 100 acres entered by Isham East and surveyed by him, but patented by her, as I read it. This must be the 100-acre grant she received earlier, then in Livingston County, the tract surveyed in 1805 ("The Kentucky Land Grants" by Jillson). How was she related to Isham? To John (I think it likely he was her son- --he was 16 and under 26 in the 1810 census). To the Elizabeth East who married Robert Lyon in Caldwell in 1812? And how were these related to Joel East and his wife Rebecca Leffan, who were in Caldwell County as early as 1812 or maybe 1814, I believe? Joel died there in 1817 and his widow Rebecca is said to have married John East (his second marriage apparently). At least some of these Easts had migrated west from Laurens County, South Carolina. I have a note from years ago to the effect that Mary East deeded land to Garrett Gray---C-320. I assume Deed Book C. Can anyone tell me briefly what that record says? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Mon Jan 20 10:29:31 2003

Since there was another Alexander McDowell in Caldwell County around the same time, information is conflicting. WADE
I have been tracing my great grandmother's family. Her mother was Barbara Delilah Boon Wade. She married Andrew Jackson Wade July 23, 1873 in Crittenden Co. Ky. She died in 1918 and he died in 1929. They are both buried in Asher Cemetery in Caldwell Co. I was just there friday, 5-3- 2002. They both have modern day tombstones at there graves. Someone had to have them put there later on after there deaths. I would like to know who it was who had them put there. Also, beside there tombstones is a nother one with the names Preston 1880-1896 and Eller 1882-1884. Are these their children? If so this would make them my great grandmother's brother and sister. Any help would be greatly appreciated. John Guill bjguill@henderson.net Sat May 4 19:42:10 2002

I found Thomas listed as a brother of J. J. C. SMITH, son of William & Margaret (they died when Thomas was still quite young), in the 1880 Federal Census for Hopkins County. DEARING/DEERING
I need to link up with someone in Caldwell County who is working on a Bedford County, Virginia line--my Dearings moved to Trigg County, KY in 1870 from Bedford. My 2nd great-grandmother, Missouri Malinda Franklin Dearing moved from Trigg to Caldwell County after 1890 when her husband, Oliver Van Buren Dearing died. On January 29, 1893, she married David Hall. They were living in Princeton for the 1900 Census. Her daughter, Annie J. Dearing Burgess was living next door to her. Missouri died in 1907 and is buried in Union County. If you are familiar with these lines, will you please contact me, I have a great deal of information, including photographs of early Dearing/Deerings that I would love to share. If you have a photograph of Oliver Van Buren Dearing, would you let me know? Thanks. Tue Jan 8 04:48:58 2002

One of my Dad's last wishes was to return to Kentucky. That was all he talked about in his final days and how we was planning to go up there in October. STEVENS
The Gold Rush Story Has anyone else heard tales about ancestors in Caldwell County who went on the Gold Rush during the Civil War? Did Jesse STEVENS go with other men in his family? With friends & neighbors? Would like to hear from you and find out who, other than Jesse STEVENS, was in the group of men. The story as told to my grandmother: "he (mrs Shirleys Daddie) went… …with a Bunch of men in The Gold rush he was Gon 2 years and he Dident Live Long after he came home" [from one of Mamaw Shirley's undated letters in the late 1960's. Her spelling - she never used periods or commas] By 1861, news of the discovery of gold in Colorado had drawn many hopeful gold prospectors to what had been a sparsely populated territory. Jesse Stevens, born c. 1814, & 2nd wife, Mrs. Harriet GAINES were on the 1860 Caldwell County, Kentucky census, indicating that he may not have left until after it was taken. If he stayed 2 years, his death which occurred in late 1863 or early 1864 would indeed have been just a little while after his return. This gold rush story was told to Mamaw by Martha Stevens Shirley, her mother-in-law. Martha, daughter of Jesse Stevens and 1st wife, Jane LEECH was the 2nd wife (first was Clarissa SIGLER) of Samuel Perry SHIRLEY. Would also like to hear from Jesse's descendants. They had the following children:John M. b. 1826, Delilah b. 1835, Silas b. 1836, William C. 1840, Bluford b. 1842. Elizabeth Duckworth born 31 March 1803 in Kentucky and died 10 May 1866 in Knox Co., Indiana. She is buried in Light Cemetary, Widner twp, Knox Co., Indiana. Russel Adkins was born about 1800 in Kentucky also. He is not buried with his wife, and I have no death date. He may have gone to live with one of his daughter after his wife died. Delilah moved to Grant Co., Wisconsin before 1851 where she married Fredrick Mero. There are a lot of Adkins in this county that came up from Morgan Co., Kentucky starting in 1828. Many of the Duckworth people cane from Caldwell and Bath Co., Kentucky. I would love to share information with anyone. I know that John A. Adkins and Silas Adkins served in the Civil War in the 33 Reg Infantry from Indiana. I have a note that shows a Russel Adkins on the 1860 Census for Knox Co., Indiana. I don't know if it is my Russel or a son. Angela

Argggg, I still can't find much information on James Rufus Dunn. I do know more than the last time I posted and here is what I know: James Rufus Dun/Dunn B. 1859 in Caldwell County, KY married to Pernicie/Bernicie "Necy" Ann Mackey. 'Necy' and James appear in the 1880 Census (with the surname DUN) for Princeton District and there is a John Satterfield listed as James' stepson. John is 6 years old at the time. James and Necy had the following children: 1. Faye Allen Dunn b. Sept 1888, Caldwell County m. Alexon Monroe Smith 2. Fount Allen(?) Dunn b. Sept. 1888(Faye and Fount were twins), Caldwell County m. Herman Lee Gower and moved to Illinois 3. Nina Bell b. 1895, Caldwell County m. to John S. Calvin and later to Homer C. York. With John Calvin, Nina had a son, Grover Heath Calvin. 4. Fred Liscomb b. November 1889 Caldwell County 5. Robert-nothing known about him other than he supposedly never married. 6. Vergie/Virgie b. Caldwell County, stayed in KY when the family later moved to MO about 1905 Note, in Nunn Cemetery-Trigg County, I found this: Fowler, Virgie Dunn Thommson March 28,1879--March 25,1935 I don't know if this is my Virgie. 7. Birdie-Note, a relative told me she married and moved to Ohio and had 2 daughters. And I found this: : MARRIAGES: Lyon County Marriages, 1889-1917 J. T. Tolan Birdie Dunn May 21,1899 I don't know if that's my Birdie but it could very well be. 8. Ura Dunn-nothing known about him 9. Lucy Dunn-all I know is she stayed in KY when the family moved. And that's about all I know other than the family moved to the Sikeston, MO area around 1905 and remained there. If anyone knows anything else about this family, I'd love to hear from you. ASHER, LANE
Donna DiSalvo placed two Querys on this board on 11/08/1999 and 11/19/1999. I can't get her E-Mail to work. It bounces back. She wanted to know about Indiana Lane and A. D. Asher. She said she found them in the 1870 Census Index for Caldwell. If she sees this or if anyone knows how to reach her, I have information that is too close to ignore. I would like to exchange Info. My Gr. Aunt Indiana Oregan Lane. (Aunt Annie) married Doniphan Asher. They had four children: Lilly, Bob, Al, and Minnie. Indiana's linage goes Indiana Oregon (4) Lane, Leander Jackson (3) Lane, Horatio Gates (2) Lane, Unknown (1) Lane. Minnie Asher married Al Rowland and they had three children: Tennie, Robert, and Richard My Aunt Cladia wrote in 1981 that she had in 1957 visited the fine big house that Al Rowland built for Minnie on the old home stite of Aunt Annies. I assume where she and Doniphan lived and where Minnie grew up. She also stated that from the home site, "You could see the Asher Cemetery where many of our relatives are buried." I would very much like to find this Asher Cemetery. She said in 1957 that it was very well kept. Thanks for any help. Additional note: From this same 1981 letter about Claudis 1957 trip ( I think she is refering to KY.) She says that Bob Rowland, Minnie's son, lives only a short way from the big house that Al Rowland built. However Al Rowland has died at some time and now Minnie and her brother, Al Asher live in the house so she can take care of him. His wife had also died, so he sold his place and moved in with her. Minnie's other son Richard Rowland and his wife Nell and their three children also live in the big house. It is large enough for all of them..............Bob Sat Dec 9 03:17:55 2000

She had a necklace with beads on and beads were on the dress. (This is supposed to be her mother or grandmother and she was 15.) My uncle Harry was asked if they could have the photo and he said yes. SWATZELL
John C. Swatzell was born 1830 at Greene County Tennessee. He married Nancy Jane Kent on 07 Nov 1852 at Stewart County Tennessee. You may see in some publications they were married at Trigg County Kentucky. Trigg does not have a record, but Stewart does. Nancy Jane was the daughter of Gordon Kent and Gilley Jones. Nancy is on the 1850 Caldwell County Kentucky census, age 15, with parents and siblings: Sally A. 11, Mahala C. 9, James H. 8, Aden J. 5, Thomas J. 3, and Robert Mack 1. John is on the 1860 Caldwell County census as C. Swatzel with Jane, age 25, and Benjamin, age 6, Fanny, age 4, and Mary, age 2. John is listed as a farmer. (If someone has a full page copy of the original census, I would appreciate a copy.) By the 1870 census, John C., age 40 is in Trigg County as a blacksmith. It appears he has a new wife, Mary V., age 29. Benjamin J., age 15, Martha E. F. (believe is Fanny), age 1?, (my copy hard to read), Mary J., age 10 (should be 12), and John C., age 8 are in household. I don't know what happened to Nancy Jane. I don't know if or when Mary V. married John C. or if John C. (son) is of this union. I do know Mary V. Swatzell's 3rd marriage at age 32 took place in Caldwell County at her residence to Arthur W. Worley on the 5th day of Feburary 1874. Mary Jane and Martha E. Swatzell were present. I don't know what happened to John C. (father). Or any others except for Mary Jane. I know Mary Jane's first marriage at age 16 was to George Adkins at William Williamson's in Caldwell County on 27 April 1875. Arthur Worley and B. F. Swatzell were present. Mary Jane was on the Union County KY 1880 census at her Uncle Isiah Kent (born 1855) and using her maiden name. Divorce? On June 22, 1881 Mary Jane married William Harrison Horton at Gallatin County Illinois. She was 23. For sure, two of Nancy Jane's brothers, Robert Mack Kent and Thomas J. Kent (Uncles to Mary Jane) ended up in Gallatin/White County Illinois, later around northeast Arkansas, then on up into Southeast Missouri. I would appreciate any information to fill in the blanks. Thanks. Wed Jul 19 22:11:44 2000
