Andrew James Jolly
1882-1925
Andrew James Jolly Sr. was born in Mentor in Campbell County on May 15, 1882,
the son of Edward Moses Jolly and Anna Elizabeth Smith. Edward was the
Mentor postmaster and he was the son of
James Moses Jolly and
America Vickers. Andrew J taught school in rural Campbell County at
California, Augusta and Bedford. Later he owned the A J Jolly School
Supply Co., owned and operated the Southern School Journal and was manager of
the Ohio Valley Teachers Association.
He was elected a state representative from Campbell County and was in the process of running for re-election when he contracted typhoid fever and died three weeks later, August 5, 1925. He was 43. A J Jolly Elementary School on Kentucky 8 near California is named in his honor.

Andrew Jordan Jolly attended the A J Jolly Elementary School, played on the high school basketball team, and joined the air corps during WWII, flying 35 B-17 bombing missions. He was awarded the air medal for bravery on six occasions. After the war Andrew Jr. attended Xavier University and obtained a law degree from the University of Cincinnati Law School. He became a Campbell County deputy sheriff while still in school. He ran for county commissioner in 1949, lost ran again in 1953 and lost again.
He ran for county judge and was elected in 1957, re-elected three more times. He ran for lieutenant governor in 1967, but lost to Wendall Ford. He was directly responsible for the creation of the A J Jolly Park in Aspen Grove. He died January 12, 1989.
