Claryville/Pond Creek

This community is located along Kentucky 9 a few miles south of Alexandria, but north of A J Jolly Park.  Also in the area is the Campbell County High School that opened in 1995, the Kahn's Meat plant (now Sara Lee) and the Southern Campbell Volunteers Fire Department. It was first known as Pond Creek with a post office established in 1868 with William T Clary as the first postmaster.  The name was changed to Claryville in 1876.

Several years ago some Claryville residents considered the idea of incorporating to block southern expansion by Alexandria, but the proposal met strong local opposition.  It wasn't the first.  A Kentucky State Journal story in November 1888 said Claryville residents voted to form a city.  Among the city officials were Nick Miller as mayor, Theodore Marz as clerk and Frank Clark as police judge.

They incorporated in order to provide police protection after an unsuccessful attempt to get Newport to assign an officer for Claryville.  This was before creation of the county police. Two subdivisions have been built near the high school in 2000, Pond Creek and Parkside Estates, with another 700 homes planned for the area.

Claryville Elementary-was located about 1 1/2 city blocks from Millers Road.  This building was torn down and a house built on it.

Claryville Elementary #2-was a one room frame building almost across from Miller Road and closed in 1936 when the students went to Grants Lick.
