Edmund Nathaniel Benchley

Submitted by Andrew Boyd

Edmund Nathaniel Benchley,
a member of the 6th Infantry, is listed on Campbell County's Spanish American Casualties
as a Corporal. Benchley was not, however, a Corporal but a Lieutenant. He was
born in Worcester, MA May 3, 1876. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, he was sent directly to Cuba upon graduation in 1898 with the 6th Infantry.

He was fatally shot July 1, 1898 just months after graduation. News of his death
reached his family on July 4.

The photograph comes from the West Point website devoted to the Class of 1898.

Benchley is buried at West Point Cemetery.

Incidentally, Edmund's brother, Robert was a writer for the New Yorker and wrote
for (and appeared in) Hollywood movies. Robert Benchley's grandson, Peter Benchley,
is the author of Jaws.
