Squire Grant Deposition
The deposition of Squire Grant of Lawful age Taken at the house of Jonathan Carmack in the County of Campbell on the 25th day of July 1823. Transcription done by Margaret Hartman.
Question: Were you acquainted with the John Williams as early as the 22d of May 1780 and was he then known and called by the title and style of Major Williams?
Answer: In the year 1779-80 during the setting of the Commissioners at Bryans Station Major John Williams borded at my Fathers in Said Station and acted as Clerk to Said Commissioners; he was Stiled Major Williams.
Question: Were you or not acquainted with old Abraham Hemptenstall? How long since you first became acquainted with him? Do you not believe from general report that he was in this Country at an early period say 1773 & 1774 as on e of Hancock Taylors hands and party executing the old military surveys?
Answer: I believe I was acquainted with said Hemptonstall from about 1786. I understood Hemptonstall himself and others that he was in the country as early as 1774 and acted as a Chain Carrier or marker to Hancock Taylor as a surveyor.
Question; Did or not said Hemptonstall shew you the beginning corner of the said Hugh Mercer's said survey?
Answer: Hemptonstall shewed me the corner alluded in the question.
