Newport Cemetery
1820-1859
Information comes from an article by Jim Reis
originally published in the Kentucky Post June 15, 1998, and from records held
at the Campbell County Historical Society. Names will be
added as material is found.
The second cemetery for Newport was originally located on Ringgold Street and is now the grounds of Newport Junior High School at Eighth and Columbia streets. The Newport Cemetery Company owned and operated the cemetery beginning in the 1820s until the late 1850s, when they started burying people at their new location in Southgate. These burials were supposedly moved to the new cemetery at Southgate, but there is only some limited records of them, which will be posted here as they are found.
A Newport High School was built on this site in 1872. When the school was built, many bones were found. And remains were found again in the 1990s when an addition was built on to the Junior High School. The first cemetery was the Madison Street Burying Ground on Fifth Street.
