Lt. Stephen T Tibbatts
Army and Navy Chronicle, January 21, 1839
We are pained to announce, says the Louisville Journal of the
29th December that Lt. Stephen T Tibbatts of the 4th Infantry U.S. Army, a young
officer of highly respectable standing, cut his throat on Saturday evening and
died immediately afterwards.
Lt. Tibbatts was a classmate of ours at the military academy, and we feel bound to record that he was a high souled, warm-hearted Kentuckian. His ready and usually noble impulses have been diverted by some unhappy means against himself.
Stephen Tibbatts was born in Kentucky; in the military academy in 1831; promoted to 2nd Lt. 7 August 1836 and died December 29, 1838 in Louisville. He was buried on the parade grounds of the Newport Barracks.
