(4:20) I forgot to mention about my cousins. I had two
cousins that was a little bit taller than what I was. I was pretty good size.
Anyway, we had gone down to church one night, down the road about a mile. And,
My cousin, he got him a girl friend. So they came back up the road past the
house. He said to me, “Well, I'll go take my girlfriend home. I'll be back in
about 30 minutes.” Well I said, “OK, I'll just go in and go on to bed.” We went
to go into a big long hall, then turned up a stairway and into the bedroom.
When I went up there, my aunt, she had a day bed, half bed on one side of the
room, and there was a full size bed on the other side of the room. Of course
she said, “You and the boys can sleep over there. Go ahead and go to bed,”
said, “Where is my cousin?” I said, “He went on up the road with his girl
friend, said he would be back in about 30 minutes.”
My Aunt was a school teacher, and she was well read. She was constantly reading things, so she said, “Go ahead and go to bed, and as soon as I finish this page or chapter, I'll turn the light out so you can go to sleep.” I said, “That's alright, it won't bother me.” So I went to bed, and in a little while, she turned the light out. I laid there for, oh it seemed like about 20 or 30 minutes. I heard somebody walk up on the front porch, walk through the hallway, up the stairway, in at the door, into the bedroom where we were sleeping. ____(6:20_They walked right up beside of my bed. I thought it was my cousin come home. I expected him to set down on the side of the bed, take his shoes off and get in bed. He didn't say anything, and I didn't either. Instead of him stopping at the bed, he went on past it, and walked around all over the room. Came back up by the bed again. Didn't stop that time either, he went right on around, all the way around the room. Well I laid there listening at that, and I thought now what in the world is he doing anyway. I thought maybe he laid a cigarette down somewhere, and he is hunting for a cigarette. So he made two or three more passes around the room, still didn't stop to take his shoes off and come to bed. I thought to my self, gosh, he surely didn't get drunk in that length of time cause he would if he had got enough whiskey I guess, but anyway I didn't think he had had time to do that.
Just about the time he passed my bed again, my Aunt said to me, “Are you asleep?” I said, “No, I'm not asleep, why?” She said, “Did you hear anything?” I said, "Ya, I thought I heard Darrell come in." (That was my cousin) She said, "That wasn't Darrell. That is that walking that I told you about." When she said that, my hair stood straight up. I know it did. I scooted down under the covers as far as I could get. I laid there and listened to this walking, and it made several trips around there.
After a while, she said, "Are you asleep?" I said, "No, I'm not asleep, and if this walking keeps on, I ain't gonna be." She said, "Well, get up and turn the light on and it will quit." I said, "Oh no. I'm not going to get out of this bed, unless it gets in with me. If it gets in with me, then I'll get out of the bed and give it my bed." Anyway, I wouldn't get up. (8:18) It just kept on walking, and after a while she said, “If you want me to, I'll turn the light on so it will quit and you can go to sleep.” I said, “OK.” So she turned the light on and it stopped right where she turned the light on. Soon as she turned the light on, it stopped right there.
She said, “If I turn the light off, it will start up walking again. I said, “OK, turn if off and see what happens.” So she turned the light off, and it started in walking right where it had stopped. Right on around the room. When she would turn the light on, it would stop. As soon as she would turn the light off, it would start walking again, around the room.
So she left the light on, and after so long a time, my cousin did come back, came to bed, and we finally went to sleep. That was just one incident that happened while I was there. I was there for a couple of weeks. (9:15)
