Carter County Recorded Audio

These are quite large MP3 files. They can be downloaded over a high speed internet connection for easier listening.

Audio recordings like these are probably of interest to immediate family, but they are at least worth adding to
the Carter County site for preservation purposes. I encourage anyone with audio or video recordings to submit them to our site.

Bertha Ross, 1970's

Submitted by: Russ Debord

"Bertha" - Bertha Ross was the daughter of Jeremiah Jacob Ross
"Ernestine and Allestine" - Ernestine Marie Hartley (1918 - 2001) and Allestine Mary Hartley (1918 - 1999), daughters of Bertha (Ross) Hartley
"Gracie" - Grace Jones (1900-1969), daughter of Emma Jane Ross (1880-1968) and Milza Eperson Jones (1877-1963?)
"Gracie's daughter" - ?
"Myrtle" - Myrtle Ross, daughter of Jeremiah Jacob Ross
"Talma" - Talma Virginia (Fitzpatrick) Ross
"Henrietta" - ?
"My son works at the Cleveland Clinic"
"Zona and Bert" - Zona Jones (1907-)
"Dovie" - Dovie Jones (1912-)
"Emma's funeral" - Emma Jane Ross (1880-1968)

"I could pick out Aunt Ernie's voice and Great-Grandma Hartley and Grandma Collins's (Allestine's.)
The part where they are talking about Shaker Heights is mostly Grandma talking. ("My son lives in Shaker Heights").
I lived on Latimore until the age of three, then we moved a few blocks over to Townley and we lived there until 1985.
My dad was Allestine's son. His name was Joe. He's the one who worked at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dad died Jan 31, 2006."

Earl Jones

I believe this was recorded by Russ Debord

"Ernestine and Allestine" - Ernestine Marie Hartley (1918 - 2001) and Allestine Mary Hartley (1918 - 1999), daughters of Bertha (Ross) Hartley
"Bertha and Dutch" - Bertha (Ross) Hartley (1893-1979) and George Frank "Dutch" Hartley (1891-1970)
"Ethel Hickman Lewis" - Lucy Ethel "Ethel" Ross (1895-1996), married 1st Harry Clyde Hickman (1888-1928) and 2nd Eugene Lewis (1907-1965)
"Jeremiah Jacob Ross" - (1856-1949) was the son on John Nelson Ross (1818-1890) and Nancy Jane (Kinnamon) Ross (1819-1895).
"Earl looks like his grandpa" - Possibly Earl Jones (1902-?), son of Emma Jane Ross (1880-1968) and Milza Eperson Jones (1877-1963?)
"Sarah" - Sarah Alice (Campbell) Ross (1860-1936), Jeremiah Ross' wife
"buried up on a hill side" refers to Ross Chapel Cemetery
"your step-mother's cottage"
"Merl and Lee Black(?) ran gas station"
"Bert Jones was the great uncle of my Dad" - Probably spoken by Earl Jones

Earl Jones (grandson) says that people used to say . . . "stubborn as Jerry Ross." Bertha added that it's a Ross family trait to argue,
but that the Campbell's (her mother's maiden name) were peace-lovers. Of Jeramiah, Earl Jones said, "Boy, I loved that old man,
I'm telling you. He died at 94 years of age, and he smoked and chewed tobacco all his life. Bertha, says Jeramiah had his own teeth until he was
well into his 80's, and that when he was 92, he didn't look over 65."

When they are discussing Allestine and Ernestine and who had what color hair, eyes, etc they weren't sure who had what and who had kids or not.
Grandma Allestine was blonde and blue eyed and Aunt Ernie had dark hair and eyes. She was slightly taller and just a bit older than Grandma Allestine,
but she used to tell me Grandma was the older of the two of them. Aunt Ernie married Joseph Earl Kelley and they had no children.
Grandma married Wayne Nelson Collins of Olive Hill, KY. (Not sure when they married or divorced).
They had two children, Joseph Nelson Collins, my father, and Mary Lynne, who is still living.

Debord - I believe this was recorded by Russ Debord.

Russell was the son of Grace (Jones) Debord. and Willis Debord. Grace was the daughter of Milza and Emma (Ross) Jones.
Emma was the daughter of Jeremiah Jacob Ross and Sarah Alice (Campbell) Ross.

The audio is very poor. May be Ross-related.
