Spanish - American War

War Declared on April 21, 1898

The United States was supporting Cuba in its struggle against Spanish rule.  After the mysterious explosion
of the U. S. S. Maine in Havana Harbor, war was declared against Spain.  On May 1, 1898, Commodore

Dewey defeated the Spanish Fleet that had been guarding the Philippines.  President McKinley
authorized the assembling of troops to mount a campaign against Manila.  The Spanish-American
War would become the first overseas war fought by the United States.
