Land, James A.

Again has the Grim Reaper entered our midst, taking from us a man whom all respected, James Land, on Thursday, May 10, (1928) complications of flu being the immediate cause of his death. He was born in 1866, united with Methodist church in youth, was first married to Mary Davis who preceded him to the grave in June, 1923. One daughter blessed this union, Hattie B., who became the wife of Mr. Coy Price and left two children when she died in 1911. The son-in-law and grandchildren lived with Mr. Land until his second marriage to Mrs. Pauline Foster Teater, in 1925. A host of relatives and friends mourn the death of this good man and extend sympathy to the wife and grandchildren.
Interment took place in the Methodist churchyard here after services conducted by his pastor, Rev. Landrith.

Land, Lura Bell Davis

On Monday, January 27, 1919, the Grim Reaper entered the home of Mr. John Land and called from her suffering his beloved wife. Lura Bell Land was the daughter of W. T. Davis, deceased, and was 44 years, 3 months, and 24 days old. November 19, 1890, she was married to Mr. John Land, their wedded life having been more than 28 years. She united with the Liberty Baptist church when only 12 years of age and lived a consistent Christian life. She was very much interested in the work of the church and Sunday school and will be greatly missed from the work. Mrs. Land was a devoted wife. She was never blessed with children but was a true mother to those who needed her love and care. Her watchword thru life was Service and she gave her life in trying to help others. The cause of her death was pneumonia, following influenza. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, one brother, Mr. Thompson Davis of Buckeye, and the ones to whom she had been as a mother, besides a host of relatives and friends.
The precious body was laid to rest in the Lancaster cemetery, Wednesday, beneath a beautiful floral offering which could only speak in a very small way of the love her relatives and friends felt for her.

Land, Mary Etta Davis

This community was shocked and saddened by the death of Mrs. James A. Land on Saturday morning, June 23rd (1923) at eight o'clock. Death was caused by pneumonia and heart trouble following an attack of measles.
Mrs. Land before her marriage was Miss Mary Etta Davis. She was born April 16th, 1874. At the age of eighteen she was married to James A. Land. Only one child, Hattie B., who married Coy Price and who died almost twelve years ago.
Since that time she had cared for the two motherless children left by this daughter, who will miss her tender ministrations.
Since the age of fourteen she had been a devoted member of the Methodist church.

Leavell, Ben

LANCASTER - Services for Ben Leavell, 73, Maplewood Drive, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ramsey Funeral Home by the Rev. Walter Lee Arnold. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery. He died Sunday at Garrard County Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 28, 1923, in Garrard County, he was a son of the late William and Minnie Arnold Leavell. He was a retired mail carrier and farmer. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge 104 F&AM and Oleika Shrine Temple. He was a Marine veteran of World War II and the widower of Carolyn Montgomery Leavell.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jordan, Xenia, Ohio; two sons, Woodie Leavell of Danville and Joe Leavell of Lancaster; a brother, Robert Leavell, Lancaster; a sister, Minnie Lee Arnold, Lancaster; and five grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Billy Leavell, Dickie Arnold, Kenneth Yeakey, William Kirby Teater, E.C. McWhorter and Johnson Price. Honorary pallbearers are David Layton, Billy Speake, John Doty, Russell Ball, Louis Ball, Bob Henderson, Jack Bailey, Russell Hester and J.B. Jones. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today.

Locker, Mary Frances

Mrs. Mary Frances Locker, 78, died suddenly this morning at her home, 648 Winnie street. Mrs. Locker was the daughter of the late Frank and Hanna Wheeler Goings and was born and reared in Garrard county.

Long, John P.

Mr. John P. Long died at his home on Richmond street in this city on last Monday morning at 2:30 o'clock. His death was not unexpected as he has been in feeble health for many months and for the past week his life has hung in the balance. After funeral services at the house at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning by Rev. O. P. Bush, all that was mortal of the kind husband and father and good citizen was placed at rest in the Lancaster cemetery. Mr. Long was born in Madison county on May 24, 1837 and was the son of Perry and Susie Tudor Long. He united with the Baptist church at Gilead in that county fifty years ago and had ever been a consistant member. He was also one of the oldest members of the Masonic lodge at Kirksville. Mr. Long's entire life, until he removed to Lancaster less than two years ago, was spent in Madison county, where he was held in the highest esteem for his many noble qualities. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Fannie West of Madison county, a relative of the family of Mrs. Rebecca West of this place, and by one son, Mr. Robert Long Jr of Buckeye this county and four daughters, Mrs. Hattie Coy, wife of Mr James Coy of Kirksville, Mrs. Jennie Perkins, wife of Dr. J. H. Perkins of Henrietta, Okla, Mrs Susie Dozier of Oklahoma and Mrs. Cora Burton, wife of Mr. Richard Burton of this county.
Mr. Long since his removal to Lancaster has not been able to mingle much with the people of the community owing to his feeble condition, but there were many who knew him and with all whom he came in contact he added to his list of warm friends and admirers. He was a conservative man, but extremely kind hearted and those who know him best can bear witness to his many splendid characteristics.
