Burning of Hotel Garrard
I remember the hotel looking much like this. In the 1940's-1990's, it was owned by Dr. Prentis Walker and his daughter Mary Edith Gooch. Some time in the 50's, the front was modernized and this changed the appearance of the building. This building burned several years ago. I watched it burn. In my youth, Dr. Walker was a very old man. He loafed on a bench in front of the hotel talking to all who would stop. He chewed constantly, and it was dangerous to walk by him without watching for his aim. A small park and parking lot replaced it. The building on the right was the Garrard Bank and Trust Company for many years. Its front was also modernized and changed its appearance. It is still a bank building. Frank Marksbury, whose family is mentioned in connection with other images, was president of the bank for many years.
