Thomas Jefferson J. King
5th son of Woodard P. King & Elizabeth Capps
Jefferson was born 1843 probably in Ash Co. N.C. as his parents
were migrating to Harlan Co. from Guilford and Warren Co. N.C.
They carried with them a clock, today still in the King family.
(Note: It has been rumored the Kings were of part Indian extraction
and I personally have found nothing to dispute this, in fact several
cousin
besides myself all grew up with similar tales of "braided hair, broken
English, dark complexion).(kw.)
Jefferson was raised in Harlan along with his 7 other siblings.
Jefferson and his younger brother Allen Felix both served in the
Harlan Co. Battalion Company C during the start of the Civil War.
When the Battalion disbanded both boys joined the 49th Kentucky
Union Infantry, formed in June of 1863 and based at Ft. Nelson Union
depot in Jessamine Co. KY. They were assigned to Company D.
This Company set out on Oct. 28th 1863 for Somerset, Ky. by
Oct. 30th young Felix King was dead circumstances unknown.
It must have been a sad day for Jefferson to see his brother just
barely 16, dead.
Following the war Jefferson wed to Anna Bailey b. 1838, daughter
of Wright Bailey and his 2nd cousin & wife Mary Bailey.
Mary was the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Kelly) Bailey.
Wright was the son of William Bailey while Andrew was son of
John Bailey, brother to William.
Anna Bailey's brother was Minter Bailey who served with Jefferson
in the Ky. 49th but in Company E.
Jefferson and Anna had the following children:
1. Mary/Polly Elizabeth born about 1869
2. Hannah born 1871 married 2nd Feb. 13, 1911 John C. Lankford
3. Andrew born 1874
4. Offie born 1876, died 1906 wed Dec. 1893 Sarah J. Huff
(Note: Jefferson had a brother Offie residing in Breathitt Co. KY.)
Anna Bailey died by 1894 and Jefferson wed again to Lavinia, who is
believed to be the mother of the following:
5. Granville born 1896
6. Elijah born 1898
7. Sarah E. born 1900
Jefferson is last found in 1920 Clay Co. his age is 76, wife Vina is
age 59 & son Granville is still at home age 23 with daughter Sarah
18.
Nothing more is known aside from the 2 photos where we can see
Jefferson both as a young man and later in the 1896 group photo
with his brother Chockly C. King.
