It is believed that Christian Spears was in Kentucky as early as 1780.  Family lore says that Christian and his first wife (name unknown) were at Ruddell's Fort when it was captured in June of 1780. Mrs. Spears was drowned while crossing the Licking River on the march to Michigan.  Christian was imprisoned on Pontiac Island, Michigan for a while, perhaps with other Kentuckians. It is believed sometime shortly after, Christian Spears married Ann Mary Burger, daughter of John Burger, who was also taken prisoner from Ruddell's Fort. After they married Christian and Ann Mary came back to Kentucky and lived for a while in Bourbon County where he appears on the 1800 tax list . By the 1810 census he and his family are listed on Stoner Creek. The family of Christian Spears at that time consist of one male 45 plus years of age; one male under 10; two males 10-15; one female under 10; one female 10-15 and one female 45 plus years of age.
