Armed forces news

Pvt. Stanley F. Van Winkle of Morrill qualified for admission to the U.S. Army Engineer School. He was to engage in individual advanced training to repair and maintain all the heavy construction equipment used by the Army in the field.

The following people had been ordered to report for Armed Forces physical examinations by the selective service board; William Earl Judd, Sherill Isaac Lakes, Benny Rose, Larry Cunagin and Kenneth Bowles. Danny Dale Pennington and Walter Arthur Hundley were order to report for induction.

School starts                                                                                                                             School was scheduled to open on August 18 with an in-service day for teachers. The student first day was August 21, with class time for students beginning at approximately 9 a.m. The price of school lunches increased from 20¢ to 25¢ per day at schools which had kitchens and hired cooks. However, the Rural Lunch Program continued to operate at schools that didn't have cooking facilities, with the teacher or her aide preparing the lunch for 10¢ a meal.

State Fair                                                                                                                                       Pat Boone and Eddy Arnold were the headline acts at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. The fair also featured a rodeo, a circus with a real live elephant and the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corp.

At Gay's Supermarket                                                                                                                Gay's Supermarket was advertising steak for 79ó a pound. Pork chops were 59ó a pound. A two pound box of Kraft cheese was 69ó and jelly was four 22 oz. glasses for $1. Maxwell House Coffee was only 69ó for a pound can.
