Most people of Eastern Kentucky who were born prior to 1930 remember the Workers Progress Administration which was commonly referred to as the WPA. With the crash of the Stock Market in 1929, the great depression soon became a reality. Millions of people throughout our nation became unemployed and destitute. A federal work program was begun by the United States Congress under the leadership of President Roosevelt. Many of the public buildings in present day Johnson County were built of native sandstone rocks through the auspices of this program.

The Graves Registration Program was a lesser known project of the WPA. The purpose of this public project was to learn and record burial data on men who had served our country in war from the American Revolution through World Ward I. Data contained in this registration was completed by family members and neighbors some sixty years ago.

Some of this recorded information will not be found through any other sources; thus, this list may provide genealogical data unlocking the door for many family historians of our area. The complete list contains personal data for more than seven hundred fifty persons.
