Henry
Hartlege was born in May 1839 in Jefferson Co., KY, the son of
Casper Henry and Elizabeth Johanna Hundorf Hartlage, both of
whom had immigrated from Laer, Kingdom of Hannover in 1836.
He married Sarah Anna Brinley, daughter of Thomas C.
Brinley and Frances Baumgardner, on 20 Oct 1859 in Jefferson
Co., KY.
He
was described as 5 feet, 8 inches in height, fair complexion,
hazel eyes with brown hair on 1 Oct 1861 when he enrolled in the
Union Army for 3 years.
He began military service on 8 Oct 1861 in Company B, 1st
Battalion, Provost Guards of Louisville.
In a 5 Sep 1906 declaration trying to prove
his age, Henry reported that did not remember what age he gave
at time of enrollment as he was under the influence of liquor at
the time.
He served as a Private in Company B, commanded by Captain
William Blood.
His last name was spelled Hartledge in the records.
His brothers Theodore Joseph and William Hartlage also
enlisted at the same time.
The
1st Battalion, Louisville Provost Guards, later designated as
the 34th Kentucky Infantry, was organized on 26 Sep
1861 under Lt. Col. Henry Dent.
The unit’s primary duty was to guard military and
political prisoners.
Enlisted members were to stay in vicinity of Louisville,
KY and were to receive $20 per month.
General Buell changed this to $13 per month.
The Secretary of War allowed those promised higher pay to
muster out.
Company B and a larger portion of three other companies
were discharged in October 1862 at Louisville.
Henry Hartlege ended military service on 4 Oct 1862.
Henry
and his family lived in the Oakford District of Daviess Co., KY
at the time of the 1880 Census.
The family returned to Louisville before 1900.
Henry and Sarah had these children: Ruellah
Elizabeth (b. 2 Feb 1861), William Thomas (b. 13 Nov 1863), Mary
(b.1865), Carrie Lee (b. 19 Sep 1867), Alice Ellen (b. 15 Apr
1870), John Richard (b.15 Apr 1874), Lucy Anna Delpha (b. 7 Oct
1876), Cora May Paul (b. 12 Sep 1879), George Grover Cleveland
(b. Nov 1884), and A. E. C. (b. circa Jul 1887).
Several of the children used the Hartledge surname
spelling.
Henry married Emma Roberta Ewing, daughter of Alexander
Ewing, on 8 May 1913 in Louisville.
He died on 12 Jan 1915 at City Hospital, Louisville, at
age 75.
The cause of his death was chronic endocarditis and fatty
degeneratious dilatation of heart.
Chronic interstitial nephritis was contributory.
He was buried on 13 Jan 1915 at Cave Hill National
Cemetery, 701 Baxter Avenue, Section E, Site 4650, Louisville,
KY.
