HINDMAN STREET NAMES
After
the Historical Society's presentation of the historical names of the
streets in
Hindman, the Hindman City Council meeting on 1 July 1996, by motion
made by
Mrs. Patricia Calhoun, to retain the historical names of the streets in
Hindman, and seconded by Mr. Ed Howard, the Society was then
recommended to present
the listing to Mrs. Josie Cornett. Here
is that list:
Historical
Names:
Bailey's
Street (the
street going up by Cody's Hardware and the Courthouse) Named for John
M. Bailey.
Hagans'
Street (the
street going parallel to Main Street behind the Courthouse in front of
Josie's office)
Duke's
Street (the street between the
present Circuit
Court Clerk's office and
the courthouse)
May's
Alley
(the
street leading down to the jail) A later mayor changed the name to
Justice Lane
Main
Street
(the
Main Street of Hindman)
Duke's
Branch (the hollow behind the courthouse)
Sarah
Everage
Branch (the
mistakenly named hollow bearing the present name o
f
Edward's Branch - the
importance of the name of this
hollow
is that this is the location where Sarah Everage and Solomon
Everage lived - not on
the Settlement School grounds which was the
former property of William W. Baker, and later Granby Carew Smith.)
The
following street
names of privately owned drives were also proposed to the City Council:
Carew
Drive (Private
drive leading from behind the
courthouse off Duke's Branch
Road to the Knott County Historical Society.)
Mary
Belle Lane (The
Fork in Carew Drive midway to the top of the hill - leading
out to Mike Sturgill's
& to the apts now owned by Mattie
Martin)
W.W.
Baker Lane (The
driveway directly across from the Knott County Public
Library leading up to the homes of Hilliard Smith,
Greta Napier, Ronnie & Tony
Napier, Stan Napier.)
Rolen
Hills
(The private drive
leading from Angus Branch Road to
the home
of Colleen (Napier) Rolen.)
Later out of respect to Prof. Clarke, 'Fessor Clarke Circle was changed
at the urging of David R. Smith, Susan Martin, Hassie Martin, and
Shelbiana Rhein.
