Mom and Dad's marriage

Mom and Dad were married in 1937, when the country was still in the throes of the Depression. Dad was 20, and Mom was barely 16. For a while, they lived with Dad's parents, but moved to Ohio and worked as sharecroppers. They lived in a shack on the farmer's property, and snow blew inside through the cracks in the walls in the winter, since the walls weren't finished inside and there was no insulation. Mom made Dad's underwear from feedsacks, and used feedsacks to stuff the cracks in the walsl. They were allowed to eat as much of the primary crop as they wanted - peas. That explains why Mom was never a big fan of peas!
Mom and Dad moved to Michigan - to Pontiac (about 40 miles NW of Detroit), as had Mom's sister Dorothy and her sister Irene. Many people came up US23 from Eastern Kentucky to Michigan to get jobs. Dad worked repairing furnaces for a while, then got a job working at GM Truck and Coach. Mom worked there a little while, but didn't like how the men treated the women, so she quit.

When we were kids, we used to go to Aunt Dorothy's house in Pontiac for Thanksgiving Dinner. Back then, she and Uncle Wayne lived at 43 Fairgrove. They took in roomers in the upstairs of the house, and Uncle Wayne worked for Canteen, Inc. (Canteen ran the food service for many automotive facilities in the area.) (jrh)

Violet Moore Thompson, 73, died November 29 at her Louisa residence.
Mrs. Thompson was born January 16, 1926, at Wilbur, to the late Sam and Fannie Howard Moore.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Moore; and one sister, Alkie Young.
Surviving are her husband, Grover Thompson; four sons, Henry, Billy, James and Ronnie Thompson, all of Louisa; four daughters, Shirley Baldwin and Earlene Baldwin, both of Staffordsville, Kathy Senters of Louisa and Betty Castle of Louisville; five brothers, Herman, Charlie, Denver, Thurman and Arthur Moore, all of Louisa; four sisters, Stella Johnson, Beatrice Stambaugh and Hazel Burchett, all of Louisa, and Irene Diamond of Fallsburg; and 23 grandchildren, one step-grandchild
and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 2, at 11 a.m. at Mary United Baptist Church, with
Elders Jeff Carroll, Frank Blevins and Joseph Cantrell officiating.
Burial will be in Judd Cemetery at Louisa, with Wilson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Marvin attended school at the Cando School, and Gwen (Moore) Ball was his teacher for at least part of that time. In his late teens he went to Columbus, Ohio to work, first for Federal Glass and then for Igel Construction Co., where he learned to operate heavy equipment.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 (19 yrs old) and served in the Pacific during World War ll. He was a motor machinist Mate 3rd class and operated heavy equipment. He was stationed on the Admiralty Islands. He was discharged in 1946.
After Marvin and Charlene were married he worked for Jeffrey's Manufacturing Co. in Columbus and in 1958 they moved back to Mattie, KY into a house the Marvin and his father, Bert, built. Marvin cut the trees and hauled them to the sawmill to be milled and seasoned into the lumber that was used to construct the house.
Marvin Moore, 78, of Louisa, died Friday, November 2, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Charleen B. Moore. Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 5, under the direction of Young Funeral Home.
