Leslie County Kentucky
Chief Red Birds Grave site
Submitted by: Diane Roark
A statement below from
Diane
Roark, regarding Chief Red Birds Gravesite
Diane is submitter of
photograph.
Red Bird's grave site is close to where Rt. 406
branches
off from Rt. 66. This is what it looked like before the state of KY
paved
it over when they put the new road through.

This photo depicts a grave that has always been referred
to as
Red Bird's grave site. There has always been stories about this grave
and
how the state of KY had destroyed it when the new road was put through.
Much loving care had been expended for many decades in taking care of
it
as a sign of respect for the individual buried here, so naturally,
everyone
was thrilled when this photo was found of it in the summer of 2000.
(The photo had been taken back in the 1930s by one of the missionaries
serving at Red Bird Mission). It
has been brought to our attention, though, that this is NOT the grave
site
of the famous Red Bird. So, although it is now known
this
is not the grave site of the Red Bird about whom all the stories and
history
are written, we do not know which Red Bird this grave bolonged to.
