The following marriage information was initially obtained from a portion of the James Taylor Adams Collection (Box 68) on LDS microfilm (#1689780) entitled:
LETCHER COUNTY KENTUCKY
FOR THE PERIOD OF YEARS
BEGINNING WITH THE FORMATION OF THE COUNTY
1842 TO 1851 INCLUSIVE
COMPILED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY
ANNIE WALKER BURNS
210 WEST MAIN STREET
Even though the surnames were somwhat compiled in alphabetical order in the original document, the first names were not sorted under each individual surname. Also, there were many misspelled names in the original document (letters either left out or added), and in many places certain letters were difficult to distinguish between other letters (ie. many times an 'e' and an 'o' were hard to tell apart).
I have made every effort to maintain the integrity of the original information, especially the dates, but I am sure that there are many mistakes to be found (whether from the original document or ones that I may have introduced myself). The changes that I have made from the original document are as follows:
Where the original document used abbreviations for a first name (ie. Jno for John, Wm for William, etc.), I have spelled the names out completely.
Where the original document left out or added letters (ie. Mullns instead of Mullins, Caudille instead of Caudill, etc.), I made the necessary corrections. If I was unsure, I left it alone (ie. I left alone what I thought might be legitimate spelling variations of a particular name).
Where the original document spelled the same name differently or used initials one time and spelled out the name another time (mostly in the Minister column), I chose what I deemed to be most the appropriate spelling and tried to use it consistently.
Where the original document only somewhat sorted on the surname of the groom, I have sorted the data by surname and then by first name under each surname, not only for the Groom but for the Bride, as well.
If you should find any verifiable mistakes, please send me the correction, along with the source, so that I can make the appropriate change. If you can't seem to find someone you are looking for, be sure to check for spelling variations (ie. Boling, Bowling, Bowlin, etc.). Also, look for misspellings (ie. Kinser was spelled as Thinser, etc.). I tried to correct the obvious misspellings, but I am sure that there are many left; again, please notify me if you find any.
