BATES (possibly of Clay Co.) and Margaret YATES of Madison Co. I am interested in some information that possibly ties my BATES line to the BATES families of Letcher Co. I am trying to prove or
disprove the possibility that William BATES' father may be Thomas BATES (b.1809 d.1881) who married Lucy Lee THURMAN. Thomas BATES would be son of John Wallis BATES (b.1779 d.1843) and his first wife Lavina LIGHT (m.10-29-1803). My great grandfather, William Floyd SHEPHERD was born in 1882 at Whitesburg, Letcher Co., KY. Listed last name as STERGIL on 1901 marriage license to Sarah Lucile HAYS at Gray Hawk, Jackson Co., KY. William had been raised from 5 - 6 years of age by Andrew Jackson and Martha SHEPHERD. He worked for the railroads as a track layer and died at Bloomingdale, NJ in 1956. He listed his parents as James SHEPHERD and Sarah WILLIAMS on his Railroad Pension papers. Need help in determining his true last name SHEPHERD, STERGIL or even WILLIAMS.
CRAFT, HALL, HOLCOMB
March 26, 1998 Lucie Carole Burke Weidman
Josh HALL (my grandfather) married Cordelia (last name possibly CRAFT or HOLCOMB) - Cordelia's mother's name was Elizabeth and she had a boarding house in Whitesburg. I believe Josh and Cordelia were born late in the 1800s. Josh HALL was a coal miner, I believe in Letcher County. My mother, Pauline HALL, was born July 1916. I'm looking for info on both Josh's and Cordelia's parents and siblings. This is my first try at locating family history - please help!

Cordelia's siblings: Alberta and Lizzie and several others, but unknown to me. Josh and Cordelia had several children: Andrew, Ersel?, Pascal, William, Morris, Pauline and Hattie.
April 1, 1998 Joseph E. Cornett
I am seeking information that anyone may have about my great-grandfather, Joseph CORNETT, believed to have been born in Whitesburg, KY (Letcher County) during either the 1880's or 1890's, possibly 1870's. What I know: Joseph CORNETT was married to Sally CALTON, and lived with her in Imboden, VA (Wise Co.) until (summer?) 1912, when, after supposedly killing a man in a fight (self-defense?), he left a then-pregnant Sally. It is thought that Joseph returned to Kentucky, possibly Whitesburg. Sally gave birth to their son (my grandfather) Clarence E. CORNETT, on 26 September, 1912. When he was 21 years old, Clarence E. CORNETT had his one and only meeting with his father--the description that has been passed down to me was that Joseph had grey/silver hair at the time. The one picture that I have ever seen that was supposed to be of Joseph CORNETT showed a fairly good-sized man (tall), dark hair/features, standing outside of a mine with two other miners. What little other information I have is sketchy/conjecture at best. Does anyone out there have any information about this Joseph CORNETT? I am especially interested in what happened to him following his departure in 1912.

Looking for records of my g-g grandfather, N. B. (Napolean Bonaparte) "Bony" HANEY, son of John HANEY and his third wife, Esther BLAIR of Morgan County. I believe "Bony" was the only child of this couple. Twice "Bony" was listed as living with families other than HANEYs in Letcher Co., KY during the late 1800-1900s, once at about 2 years of age, and again at around 9-10 years of age. Sorry I can't give dates, as the records have been lost to me. "Bony" was probably born around 1840. His children were son Robert I., b. abt. 1860 and a dau., Elzie (sp?). Does anyone know anything about the BLAIR or HANEY families of Letcher Co. circa 1800-1900?
FUGATE, HILL, POTTER
April 16, 1998 Suzanne Long
I am trying to locate my father's ancestors and keep running into a dead end. My father was Donald Burgess HILL, b. 7/16/25 in McRoberts, Kentucky. Died 2/20/77, Louisville, Kentucky. His father was Lymon M. HILL, b. circa 1900, in Virginia, died, 1955 in Lexington, Kentucky. Lymon was married to Nellie FUGATE and they had two other children: Merrill HILL and Virginia HILL POTTER. Merrill lived in Pike County and died about 1967. Virginia was the postmistress at Hemphill, was married to Ora POTTER, and died in 1990 (I think). I have been told that Lymon's father was Ira HILL, but cannot verify even this information. Any and all leads will be deeply appreciated.

CAUDILL, COLLINS, KISER, MASON, SEXTON, WRIGHT
June 20, 1998 Rebecca Tinsley
I am researching information on a few family names from Letcher County. My great-grandmother, Thursa Ann MASON, married John Breckenridge CAUDILL. Some years ago (15) I visited Neon, KY, to take my grandparents back to the home of their origin -- Nile Edford SKAGGS and Lola TOLLIVER SKAGGS. They emigrated from there to Ft. Pierce, FL, in about 1940. While there, we were taken to a cemetary way up the side of a mountain -- we had to drive up a dry creekbed to reach it since there was no road. In my teenage arrogance, I really did not pay much attention, although I'm sure it must have been a Skaggs or Tolliver cemetary. Is there any chance anybody on this list would know anything about it?

I'm seeking information on a Harman/Hiram HALL and his wife Matilda/Tilda (PRUITT) HALL and family. Marriage records of some of their children in Johnson Co., KY, list Hiram as from Scott & Grayson Co., VA, and Matilda from Ash Co., NC. Date of Caloway HALL's birth believed to be ca 1865. There are variations of Hiram's name: Hiram/Harm and Harman, also of Caloway's name: Caloway/Calloway/Calaway. Hiram and Matilda also had sons James P.and Jacob C. who may have been born in Letcher County. There were other children believed to have been born later in Lawrence and/or Johnson Counties. BACK, COX, ROE, WILSON
October 14, 1998 (Updated 5/17/99) John J. Hudson
I'm researching my grandfather's mother's side of the family. My great grandmother's maiden name was Rebecca COX, b. June 1842, Letcher Co., KY. Information on Letcher Co. was taken from my grandfather's record of birth. My grandfather's name was Odom WILSON. I know that he was named after Rebecca's father, Odom COX. I also know that Odom COX was married to a Sidney; we think her maiden name was ROE. This is where we need more information. Through research we have found three Odom Cox's (James Odom COX, Odom Seth COX and just Odom COX). Which of the three were married to a Sidney, and lived in Letcher Co. in 1842? Odom and Sidney COX were originally from VA. I seem to be up against a brick wall.
: I have learned that at the time of Rebecca's birth Odom Seth COX was married to Elizabeth BACK. Sidney ROE was his second wife.
