CRAB ORCHARD — Ruth McBee Armstrong, 103, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Crab Orchard, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at the Rockcastle Regional Hospital in Mount Vernon. 
She was the wife of the late John L. Armstrong who preceded her in death on June 24, 2002.

Born Tuesday, March 2, 1909, in the community of Quail in Rockcastle County, Ky., Ruth was the daughter of the late Hugh and Pearl Brown McBee. She was a retired elementary school teacher having taught in both the Rockcastle and Lincoln County school systems. She was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky Teachers College. She was a member of Crab Orchard Christian Church and a former Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include her nephews, Dr. George (Charolotte) Griffith, David (Tuana) McBee, John (Nora) McCord, Evan (Lil) McCord, Dick Fox, Marion (Anna) Fox and Tom (Ruth) Fox; nieces, 
Deborah Newland, Glenis Dick and Virginia Rose (John Wayne) Badida.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her twin sister, Mary McCord; two sisters, Martha Griffith and Eva Fox; two brothers, Estil and Evans McBee; 
a half-brother, Eugene McBee; and a half-sister, Barbara Watson.

Pallbearers will be Dick, Marion and Tom Fox; Evan and John McCord; and David McBee. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of the Crab Orchard Christian Church.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. John McCord. Burial will be in Crab Orchard Cemetery.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, March 15, at McKnight Funeral Home.

William R. BILL," 89, husband of the late Ann C. Bloyd, [ Ann Brunswick] passed away Monday, March 9, 2009. He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University.

 He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a homebuilder and a member of Shively Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, Tom Bloyd [ Paul Thomas ] and his wife, Fay; granddaughter, Sarah Grace Bloyd ; and a sister, Mary Vuker Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, with burial to follow in Resthaven Cemetery. STANFORD — Willie Ovalee Bourne, 89, of Redwood Drive, Stanford, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012, at her residence.

Born Friday April 14, 1922, in Fairmount, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Willie Erwin Greene and Fannie Day Holmes Greene. Ovalee was a retired beautician and a former employee of Palm Beach and Cowdens factories.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Welby Bourne; three brothers, Carl, Charles and James Greene; and a sister, Maebeth Huddleston

Survivors include a son, Tommy (Kathy) Bourne of Stanford; two sisters, Sybil Evans of Lexington and Mildred Kennedy of Dayton, Ohio; a grandson, Brian (Emily) Bourne; and two 
great-grandchildren, Brian McKenzie and Elliott Cole Bourne.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Fox Funeral Home by the Rev. Doyle Lester, with burial following in Buffalo Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Brad Edward Braley, 75, of Crab Orchard, passed away Sunday, March 4, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Hospital in Danville.
Born May 8, 1936, in Rockcastle County, Brad was a son of the late Otis Bradford and Fredia Corba Reynolds Braley. 

He was also preceded in death by a son, Ralph Edward Braley; sisters, Eula Taylor, Loretta Woodall, Joyce Darlene Braley and twins Ida and Ina Braley.


Survivors include a brother, Hershel (Wanda) Braley; sisters, Alline (Lester) Bryant, Kathleen Adams, Lorene Casada, Lillian (Dallas) Wilson, Barbara (Harold) Elder, Sharon (Lee) 
Burton, Sara (Wendell) Brown and Hilda (Billy) Wilson; and a host of nieces and nephews
Funeral services were March 7 at McKnight Funeral Home in Crab Orchard with Bro. Donald Lear officiating. Burial was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Nora Rothwell Britt, 59, of McKinney, KY died Friday, March 30, 2012, at her home. She was born August 19, 1952 in Franklin, IN to the late Samuel and Louise Rash Rothwell. 
She had worked for the Bluegrass 911 Communications for Lincoln and Garrard Counties for 18 years. Nora was a member of the Bowen Fellowship Church and was the widow of Johnny Taylor Britt.

Survivors include her children, a son, Shannon Britt (Kellie) of McKinney, KY and a daughter, Lena Tate (Mark) of Bradfordsville, KY; her Mother-In-Law,

Flora Taylor; a sister, Brenda Lennis (Mike) of Mooresville, IN, two brothers, Jimmy Rothwell (Darla) of Edinburgh, IN and John David Rothwell (Bonnie) of Stanford, KY; four grandchildren, 
Cheyenne and Austin Britt and Sarah Grace and Jacob Owen Tate; several nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by twin infant daughters.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 1, 2012, from 5-9, funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, all at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Mark Tate will be officiating the service. 
Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Jerry Mar Broughton, 88, passed away peacefully at the Veterans Hospital Palliative Care Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. 

 He was born in Crab Orchard, Kentucky to James and ReBeca [Irvine] Broughton. He left school early and entered the workforce to provide for his family of one sister and five brothers. 
His only break in employment came when Jerry entered World War II in the Army Air Corps. After his service he worked in construction before entering his true love, golf course 
grounds management. He served as Golf Course Superintendent at many locations throughout Oklahoma. Upon retirement from golf, Jerry opened a sharp-all shop providing 
services to many until 2010. He loved his grandchildren and playing golf.

Jerry's wife, Minnie, preceded him in 2004. His surviving family includes daughters, Barbara Riggs, Elizabeth Birkes and husband Jesse; sons, Jerry and wife Donna and James and 
wife Kimberly. He had 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday, February 18, 2012, at 10:00 am in 
Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Resthaven Memory Gardens.

CRAB ORCHARD — Lester Bryant, 68, of Crab Orchard, passed away Saturday evening, March 24, 2012, at his home. He was the husband of Alline Braley Bryant, whom he married on Jan. 26, 1961.

Born Aug. 2, 1943, in Rockcastle County, he was a son of the late Henry and Hazel Brummett Bryant. He was the former owner of Bryant's Chevron in Crab Orchard.

Survivors Include his loving wife of 51 years, Alline Bryant; a son, Richard (Jamie) Bryant; two daughters, Jennifer (Ron) Dixon and Teresa Bryant; four brothers, Lesley (Pat) Bryant, Wesley (Kathy) Bryant, David (Sherry) Bryant and Henry Bryant, Jr.; five sisters, Arlene (Milton) Irvin, Kathleen (Billy) Wilson, Irene Bishop, Willmaleen (William) Singleton and Sheila (Wayne) Down; and five grandchildren, Renee, Kayla, Justin, Trace and Cody.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at McKnight Funeral Home by Bro. Dan Gutenson. Burial will be in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

BUTLER, Loudema (Lou) age 72 died peacefully at home Sunday February 5, 2012 from the ravages of Alzheimer's disease.

Lou was born in Crab Orchard, KY in 1939 and came to Dayton in 1960, working at Sears, Daytronic Corp., and Wacline Corp. She married in 1962 and continued working until having 
her only child in 1969. She returned to work at MSDI, the family business, and remained there until shortly before her death.

Lou is survived by her loving and caring husband of 49 years John Charles, son James Andrew, his wife Tammy (Tateman) and beloved grandson Henry Selwyn. Grateful acknowledgement 
is made to Lea Ann Morris, ANP-BC of Advanced Geriatric Education and Consulting, and April Jamison whose caring assistance was invaluable. There will be no public services.

Survivors include a Special Aunt, Daisy Holton of Hustonville; 3 sisters, Geraldine Craig of Eaton, OH, Fay Jackson of Winder, GA and Phyllis Woods of Florida, 2 brothers, Ray Meeks of Eaton, 
OH and Robert Meeks of Winder, GA; several nieces and nephews; he was preceded in death by a brother Charles Carman and a sister, Deloris Howard.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2012 at K. P. Hall Cemetery. Brother Mike Dixon will be officiating. Burial will be in K.P. Hall Cemetery.

He was born May 20, 1920, in Stanford, Ky. He was a World War II veteran and worked for Conrail for 38 years as an engineer. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Wilma A.; a son, Robert C. of Spring Hill; a daughter, Barbara A. Kolby of Berwick, Maine; two stepdaughters, Beverly Gifford and Linda Hayes; 
a brother, Paul of Toledo; 20 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

CRAB ORCHARD — Annette Flannery Caudill, 77, of Hustonville, Ky., formerly of Crawfordsville, Ind., passed away Sunday, March 18, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

She was the wife of Vernon Caudill, whom she married on Sep. 17, 1952.

Annette was born in Perry County, Ky., on Dec. 10, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Palmer and Gladys (Reynolds) Flannery. She was a member of the Freemont Baptist Church in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Survivors Include her husband, Vernon Caudill of Hustonville; a daughter, Margaret Ann and her husband Jim Hiser of Crawfordsville, Ind.; a son, Homer Lee Caudill of Somerset, Ky.; a daughter, Jeanne 
Sue and her husband Robert Mings of Crawfordsville, Ind.; a son, Joseph and his wife Michelle Caudill of Hustonville; a brother, Myrl Flannery of Stanford; a sister, Sue Robbins of Crab Orchard; a sister, 
Betty and her husband Ken Price of Crab Orchard; a sister, Kathy and her husband Carl Smith of Lebanon Junction; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Annette was preceded in death by a sister, Jeannette Godbey; three Brothers, Dan, Harold and Caleb Flannery; a grandson, Michael Lee Caudill; and a son-in-law, Jimmy Busse.

Ruth L. Dailey, 96, of Stanford died Friday, March 23, 2012. She was born August 21, 1915 in Waynesburg, KY to the late Ed and Cora Mae Watts Leach. She was a seamstress for over 60 years, a member of the Stanford Christian Church, the Eastern Star and she worked with the Layman's League and the nursery at Stanford Christian Church. The Chimes in the Stanford Christian Church were donated by Ruth in Memory of her daughter Robbie Jean Owens and her granddaughter, Melva Jean Owens after their death in 1994. She was the widow of George J. Dailey to whom she was married to in 1936.

Survivors include a brother, Earl Leach of Florence, KY, a sister, Mae Phillippi of Beaver Creek, OH; 14 nieces and nephews; She was preceded in death by her daughter, Robbie Jean Owen, son-in-law Melvin Owens and granddaughter, Meva Jean Owen, two brothers, Elmer Leach and Tolbert Leach, and a sister, Blanche Skidmore.\

Funeral service wil be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at Stanford Christian Church, a visitation will be from 12 pm till time of service Tuesday at the church. Reverend Jim Baughman will be officiating the service. 
Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

He retired from self-employment in home improvement. He was a member of Sorgho Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and visiting friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, 
Mary Deatherage, in August of 1989.
He is survived by five sons, Bill Deatherage of Evansville, IN, Steve Deatherage, Kenny Deatherage, Wayne Deatherage and Les Deatherage, Jr. all of Owensboro; one daughter, Pat Jackson of 
Beaver Dam, KY; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; four brothers, Jim Deatherage, Hayes Deatherage, Clarence Deatherage and Foster Deatherage all of Stanford, KY and two sisters, 
Louise Kidd and Patty Cromer both of Stanford, KY.
Services are at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2003, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro, Kentucky. Burial will be in Sorgho Baptist Church Cemetery in Sorgho, Kentucky. 
Visitation is from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home.

MORELAND — A Memory of Life reception for family and friends of Ray, Eleanora and Don will be held Tuesday, March 13, from 6-8 p.m. at W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland.

Eleanora and Ray were most recently of Ohio. Ray, husband of Eleanora, was born in Moreland. He was the son of the late Ray and Olga Mae Nicholson Durham. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.

Ray is survived by three brothers, Sam and Russell (Betty), both of Moreland, and Horace “Rat” (Linda) of Butchertown; and two sisters, June (Buddie) Southerland of Butchertown and Dale Berns of Wake Forest, 
N.C. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John (Jaunita) and Nickie; and three sisters: Helen, (“Funny” Aaron) Mills, Betty Jane Maxey and Belle (Orris John of Louisville, survives) Disney.

Ray, along with his wife, Eleanora and his stepson, Don, will be buried at Hustonville Cemetery.

Margaret Joan "Jody" Ellis, 71, Eminence, died Saturday at her daughter's residence in Cloverdale.
Born Nov. 27, 1931 in Bloomington, she was the daughter of John Hay and Margaret Ann (Payne) Hay Qualls.

She was the owner-operator of Jody's Bait and Tackle Shop, Eminence.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary at Martinsville.

Survivors include her husband, Dallas D. Ellis ; a daughter, Tia Brummett and husband Gary, Cloverdale; a son, John Freeman and wife Joann, Ellettsville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Martin Lewis Qualls; a sister, Dorothy H. McMullen; and a brother, John Kinser Qualls.

There will be no service or visitation.

Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale, is in charge of arrangements. Burial at Shumaker Cemetery.

Barry Lynn Faw, 51, of Eubank, Ky., passed away Monday, January 30, 2012 at his residence.

He was born in Somerset, Ky., on September 26, 1960, son of Vada Frances Williams Faw and the late Glenn Allen Faw. He was a member of Oak Grove No. 2 Baptist Church, where he 
loved singing in the choir and serving as an usher.

He is survived by his mother, Vada Frances Faw; one sister, Karen Faw Cook (and Larry); one nephew, Kevin (and Auburn) Cook, all of Eubank; three nieces, Melody (and Justin) Rinker 
of Findlay, Ohio, Melinda Schmied of Louisville, Ky., and Stephanie Willis of Charlestown, Ind.; three great-nieces and five great-nephews.

His friendly smile and gentle ways will be greatly missed by a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Allen Faw; one sister, Kathy A. Faw Wilson; maternal grandparents, Manville and Osa Williams; and paternal grandparents, 
Robert A. Faw and Maude Faw Wheeldon.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 at Oak Grove No.2 Baptist Church with Bro. C.E. Jacobs and Bro. Bill Meece officiating.

Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in Crab Orchard, KY.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home and after 1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Donald Francis, 78, of Erlanger, died Monday, Feb. 13, at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Edgewood.
Born June 25, 1933, Donald was a son of the late Corey and Lela Smith Francis of Kings Mountain.  He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Mac Frances and Willard Ray Francis.

 

He was a member of Erlanger Baptist Church, and a school bus driver. A member of the Masonic Lodge No. 109 in Covington and United Auto Workers. He was a former co-owner of Morgan 
Auto Sales in Covington. He enjoyed yard work and was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan.

He graduated from Memorial High School where he played basketball. Donald was an Army veteran in Germany and retired from Ford Motor Company in Sharonville, Ohio.


Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Faye Ellis Francis; Daniel and Pamela Francis and Duane and Patti Mahan; and four grandchildren, Joshua (Hannah) Purnell, Coleman Francis 
and Piper and Harper Mahan.


Funeral services were Feb. 16 at Erlanger Baptist Church in Erlanger. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erlanger.

Born Dec. 26, 1938, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Tressie Denton Griffin. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Treadway Griffin, a son, Ricky, and daughter, Sharon Perrin.

Dora Reba Phillips Harris, 83, of Danville, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Charleston Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 2, 1929, in Oneida, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Carlan Phillips and Mandy Phillips Owens. Dora was a homemaker, and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her brothers, Dillard Phillips and O.E. Owens; and her sisters, Dessie Silcox and Gertie White.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue (Ted) Gipson of Junction City; three sons, Lonnie (Elaine) Harris of Moreland, Dennis (Joanne ) Harris of Junction City and Daniel (Judy) Harris of Stanford; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Harris will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Fox Funeral Home by the Rev. David Smith. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

CRAB ORCHARD — Kevin Lee Harris, 44, husband of Donna Maupin Harris, died Sunday, March 4, 2012.

Born June 25, 1967, in Lancaster, Ky., he was the son of Jesse and Brenda Shelton Harris. He was a member of Watts Chapel Baptist Church and a former truck driver for R & R Farms in Harrodsburg. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Other survivors include his wife, Donna Maupin Harris; a daughter, Laura (Aaron) Jones of San Antonio, Texas; a stepson, Brandon Lee Elam; a brother, Jesse (Melissa) Harris of Versailles; and two nieces, Kristen and Hannah Harris of Versailles.

STANFORD — Lonnie James King, 88, of Stanwood, Wash., passed away Friday, Jan. 27, at his home.

Born Oct. 21, 1923, Lonnie was a son of the late Everett Bradley and Gletha (Bastin) King in Hustonville, Ky. He was raised during the Depression and worked on the family farm until joining the United States Navy. He served during World War II as a motor mechanic on a destroyer escort, the USS Wesson DE-184, in the South Pacific.

Lonnie worked his entire life as a mechanic in Chicago, Ill., Phoenix, Ariz., and for Twin City Foods in Stanwood, Wash. He spent many years raising livestock and working a small farm. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a skilled marksman, where in earlier years he competed in long range rifle shooting. His real love was having a huge garden and growing and preserving his own food. He was best known for his pickled asparagus, dilly beans and pork sausage. He’ll be remembered for his gift of gab ... he had plenty.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Schacht King, whom he married in 1954; all of his siblings, George, Vernon and Charles King, Mabel Thompson and Blanche Chadwell; a nephew, Everett Claypool; and longtime companion, Eva Payne.

Survivors include his children, Gletha “Sue” Smith of Indiana, David (Heather) King of Snohomish, Wash., Carole (Jim) Ruble of Stanwood, Wash., Michael (Stacy) King of Lancaster, Ky., and Lori (Jason) Snow of Blaine, Wash.; four grandchildren, Brandon King, Stephanie Walker and Emery and Avery Snow; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Rian Klotz.

Lonnie will be laid to rest with his parents and siblings at Buffalo Springs Cemetery in Stanford, Saturday, March 17, at 10:30 a.m. A fellowship will follow at New Salem Baptist Church.

Born Friday, March 12, 1943 in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of Opal Coy Leathers of Danville and the late Owen Leathers, previously of Harrodsburg. She spent her entire career as a registered nurse and loved caring for people.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a cousin, Darlene Crawford of Indianapolis, IN and special friends: Danny and Sue Chambers of Stanford.

She was preceded in death by a brother Wayne Leathers.

Opal Eva Coy Leathers, 90, of Danville, widow of Owen Leathers, died Friday, June 17, 2011 at The Danville Center for Health and Rehabilitation.

Born June 8, 1921 in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Elsie Reynolds Coy. She was a devoted wife and homemaker along with being a seamstress. She was a record keeper at Harrods Run Farm for many years. She was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church in Danville.

She is survived by numerous cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Coy Leathers; a daughter, Jackie Leathers and a brother, Edward Coy.

Services were held on Monday, June 20, at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 21, 1962, son of Eileen M. Kwas Littrell and the late Darrell T. Littrell Sr. He was a successful business man and owner and operator of Goldcraft Jewelers. He was a member of St. Mildred's Catholic Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. 

He is survived by three sons, Douglas Gage Littrell of Louisville, KY, Nicholas Darrell Littrell and Lucas Donald Littrell, both of Bronston, his mother, Eileen M. Littrell of Bronston, his fiancée, Anne M. Piercy of Somerset, four siblings, Darrell T. Littrell Jr. of Somerset, Dawn M. Littrell of Bronston, Dean C. Littrell of Burnside and David B. & (Shelia) Littrell of Somerset, several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. 

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at St. Mildred's Catholic Church with Father Mike Ramler officiating. 

Burial will be in Pilot Cemetery in Waynesburg, KY with military honors by American Legion Post #38.

He was born in Lexington, Ky., on March 11, 1963, son of William H. "Bill" and Zelma Mullins Messer. Ronnie was a graduate of Bryan Station High School, Lexington, KY, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky and his MA degree in Los Angeles, Calif. He enjoyed traveling and designing creative advertisements; however, his passion was helping others. This was demonstrated by his career choice, that of a social worker. He especially enjoyed working with children, encouraging them to pursue their interests and talents; and, therefore making a better life for themselves. He made a difference in the lives of those who had the opportunity to know him.

He is survived by his parents, William H. "Bill" and Zelma Messer of Somerset, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his grandparents, James William and Elizabeth Siler Messer and Walter and Nannie Mullins, and a special aunt, Patsy Messer Wiggington.

Born March 27, 1925, Flossie was a daughter of the late Joe and Minnie Lear. She was the widow of Alvin Murphy.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews; her dear friends, Ruth Armstrong, Jody and Less Mattingly, and Wayne and Betty Price; and many wonderful neighbors. She was preceded in death by her son, Elbert Douglas Murphy.

Service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Preachersville Cemetery.

Mary Katherine Murphy, 69, of Berry, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana after a long battle with lung disease. Born on July 11, 1934 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Moore Leach. She married Eugene Murphy on December 8, 1954, and her dear husband survives her passing. She was a homemaker and member of the Methodist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Leroy Murphy.
In addition to her husband of 50 years, Eugene Murphy, she is survived by eight children: Patricia North, Cynthiana, Ky., Linda Stanfield, Lake City, Fla., Rosella Slade, Cynthiana, Ky., Brenda Murphy Crapps, Lake City, Fla., Johnny and Tony Murphy, both of Berry, Ky., Daniel Murphy, Springfield, Tenn., and Hope Murphy White, Berry, Ky., thirteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one brother, Arnold Leach of Kings Mountain, Ky., and two sisters, Cora Rayborn and Christine Rolland, both of Kings Mountain, Ky.
Services were held on July 3, 2004, at the Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, with Bro. Jeff Fain officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Tony, Johnny, Daniel, and Shannon Murphy, Jesse James, Jason Slade and Brandon North. The honorary pallbearers were Gary White, Dale North, Billy Slade, Clyde Stanfield, George Crapps, Danny Bowen, and Randy Rayborn.
Interment took place in the Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry, Ky.

Services are 2 p.m. today at the church chapel with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park South. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street in Jackson is handling arrangements.

Mr. Oliver was a native of Marlana, Ky. and a longtime resident of Jackson.

He retired after working 30 years at The Clarion-Ledger newspaper. A veteran of World War II serving in U.S. Army. He was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and a Mason.

Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by his wife Annie Erline Oliver in 2000.

Survivors include his daughters, Glenda Purvis of Richland, Susan Stamey of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Ann Evans, Russ Newman, Brittany Purvis, Katie Stamey, Claire Stamey; one great grandchild, Brandon Oliver Evans; sisters, Doris Irving of Stanford, Ky., Lillian Zwahlen of Waynesburg, Ky., and Barbara Siler of Ohio.

MONTICELLO — Carmel, better known as Tyler, Elmer Roberts, 64, passed away March 6, 2012, at his home in Darlington, Ind.

Born Nov. 1, 1947, he was a son of the late Luther and Lula Decker Roberts. On July 29, 1968, he united in marriage with Christine Dowell Roberts and to this union five children survive, Donna and her husband William LeGere of Stanford, Ky., Rhonda and her husband Eugene Jackson of Crawfordsville, Ind., Darlene Scott of Indianapolis, Ind., Caroline and her husband Victor Wilkinson of Stanford, Ky., and Carmel Junior Roberts of Rushville, Ind. Also surviving are his siblings, Polly Cummins, William, Luther Jr., Cas, Elisha and John Roberts; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his siblings, Floyd Pittman, Robert Pittman and Lisco Hammond, and a grandson, Ledon Wayne Tuell.

Tyler’s hobbies included working in his garden, his flowers, listening to country music and hunting and fishing when time permitted. He worked for Mid-States for more than 26 years as a crane operator until the business closed.

The funeral was Saturday at Hickey and Son Funeral Home with Bro. Vernon Dowell officiating. Burial was in Roberts Cemetery at Pueblo, KY

She was born in Ashe County , North Carolina on Monday, May 21, 1917, daughter of the late Henry and Missouri Pope Phillips.  She was a homemaker and attended Waynesburg New Life Church of God of Prophecy and Waynesburg Pentecostal Church . 

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. 

Chessie was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Robertson, who died on September 29, 1998, her parents, one sister, Bessie Phillips Pennington and nine brothers, Claude Haggy, Clint J., Spencer William, Walter Henry, Eugene, Stewart, Ambros, Dewey H. and Vernon Richard. 

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Friday, January 20, 2012 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Smith officiating. 

Burial will be in Double Springs Cemetery in Waynesburg , KY.

CRAB ORCHARD — Alma Jean Dowell Saylor, 74, of Waynesburg, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2012, at her home. She was the wife of Lowell Saylor whom she married on Nov. 27, 1957.

Born Oct. 1, 1937, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Elsie Simpson Dowell. Alma was a former employee of BPI in Stanford and was a member of the Mount Hebron Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Jerry (Lisa)¿Saylor of Waynesburg; a daughter, Connie Sue Oaks of Waynesburg; four brothers, Odia Dowell, Walter (Joyce) Dowell, Donald (Johnnie) Dowell and Freeman (Judy) Dowell; three grandchildren, Chasity Dunn, Derrick Baugh and Jordan Saylor; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan Isaiah Baugh, Chloe Dunn and Clarice Dunn.

Alma was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Russell and Gary Dowell, and a granddaughter, Heather Michelle Oaks.

Funeral services 2:30 p.m. today at Mount Hebron Baptist Church with Bros. Dan Gutenson and Casey McClure officiating.

Roy Shanks, 89, died May 2, 2008, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Stanford, Ky., the son of Augustus and Flaudia Mae Harland Shanks.

He was a United States Army Air Corp veteran serving during World War II. He was a home builder, moving from Tampa, Fla., to Hutchinson, in 2000. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Shriners.

On July 14, 1943, he married Edith Jane Russell in San Antonio, Texas. She died Aug. 15, 2005. Survivors include: Barbara L. Moots and her husband Bruce, Hutchinson; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no services. Memorials may be sent to the Hutchinson Public Library in care of Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 528 North Main, Hutchinson, Ks., 67501.

Born March 11, 1925, in Ellisburg, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Belle Wilson Lane. She was retired from American Greeting and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a grandson, David Shepperson.

Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Chester Shepperson; three sons, Ralph Shepperson of Waco, Donnie (Connie) Shepperson of Stanford and Steve Shepperson of Forkland; two daughters, June (Ed) Wright of Versailles and Barbara Ann (Bill) Mirabelli of Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson, Donnie Shepperson Jr., and Jill Wright Smith; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home by Bro. Stacy Wilson and Bro. Tony Stevens. Burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim Roessler, Maurice and Troy Maddox, Danny Pike, Buddy Southerland and Chester Swearinger.

BRODHEAD — Kenneth E. Smith Jr., 58, of Crab Orchard, died March 9 in Lincoln County.

Born May 11, 1953, in Stanford, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Pauline Harris Smith. He worked as a maintenance man at Novelis Recycling in Berea for many years and was a member of Valley Baptist Church in Cartersville.

Other survivors include five children, Ken (Suzy) Smith of Brodhead, Jacob Smith of Midlothian, Texas, and Crystal Smith, Kalieb Smith and Aaron Smith, all of Crab Orchard; three grandchildren, Samantha Lynn Bullins, Leah Smith-Rowe and Jordan Lee Rowe; two brothers, Ronnie Smith of Brodhead and Randy Smith of Crab Orchard; and a sister, Sherry Stevenson of Stanford.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Smith.

Visitation and a memorial service were Wednesday at Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals. The Rev. Dan Gutenson officiated.

Margaret Ann Wilham Spires, widow of Edward Spires, died Sunday, March 25th at Ft. Logan Hospital, Stanford. Margaret had been ill for several years.

Margaret and her beloved Ed made their home in Georgia for 35 years until Ed's death in 1997, and her sister, Ruth Young's death in 1998. Margaret then moved back to Kentucky, to be close to family, and settled in Stanford. Margaret attended Burgin United Methodist Church with her sister, other family members and her good Christian friends. Margaret was the daughter of the late Truman Wilham and Helen Wilder Cole.

Margaret is survived by her sister, Patsy W. Hayslett; a sister-in-law, Jeannette Mullins; a brother-in-law, Burt Spires; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Spurlin Funeral Home Stanford. The service will be led by Brother Doug Lester, burial will be in Mt. Moriah Christian Church Cemetery, next to her love, Ed.

Earl Eugene Steinhauer, 75, husband of Jean Holtzclaw Steinhauer, died March 7, 2012, at his residence.

Born Dec. 25, 1936, in Lincoln County, Ky., he was the son of the late Freebert William and Viola Cox Steinhauer. He was an Air Force veteran, a member of Crow Station Investment Club, a past member of the Lion’s Club and worked in the quality assurance departments for Whirlpool and Panasonic. Earl was a member and former deacon of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church where he taught youth Sunday school classes for several years. He was also co-owner of World Wide Fabrics for 27 years, a Hospice volunteer and was a funeral director for Pruitt Funeral Home many years ago.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Daniel F. Steinhauer; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ben, Forest, Freebert and Fritz Steinhauer; and three sisters, Clara Bodner, Annie Burton and Lydia Ruth Davis.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Valentine, Phil Quinn and Keith Stillwell officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ernest Martin, Bernard Montgomery, Paul Bodner, Quince Arnold, Bill Peniston and Dennis Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Servant Sunday School Class of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.

She was the owner and operator of Westerfield & Supply's Greenhouse and a member of the University Heights Christian Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

She was born April 17, 1919 in Stanford, KY to James R. and Anna E. Flanary Breedlove. Her husband, Edward W. Westerfield; and a daughter, Ada J. Kibby preceded her in death.

Survivors include: daughters, Anna I. Baker, Violet Lee Unversaw, and Sharon K. Via; sons, Edward R. and William J. Westerfield ; 23 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 13 in the G. H. WOOD, Jacob Essex

MARION -- Jacob Essex Wood, age 6, of Linn Hipsher Road, Marion, was taken to heaven on Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, following a tragic accident.

He was born Dec. 18, 1997, the son of Jay Essex and Cindy Sue (Flinchbaugh) and sister Emily Kathleen Wood. They shared wonderful times as a family and their loss is irreplaceable.

Surviving grandparents included Betty and Cliff Evans, Kathy and Carroll Flinchbaugh and great-grandparents, Florence [Brummett] and George Dye and Grata Thacker. He was preceded in death by grandfather, Jim Wood. Other relatives include, Jamie and Abbey Wood, Upper Sandusky, Jeremy, Jenny and Mira Wood, Columbus, and Tim Kelly and Sara Flinchbaugh. He will also be missed by numerous great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins and friends.

Jacob was a first grader at Ridgedale Elementary School. He loved life and enjoyed all the activities that made a 6-year-old happy including playing with their dog Jax.

Jacob's smile would light up a room and the love he shared would melt your heart. His time with us was much too short but the memories we treasure will bring comfort until we are together again.

Calling hours will be observed on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ on Richland Road. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. with Russell Howard, minister, officiating. Boyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
