Berea Cemetery

Hi,
Was pleased to learn that the information sent earlier today was of some value. I have never resided in Harrodsburg but have visited there many, many times. I consider it my home away from home. So until I received your reply I was unaware that there was a cemetery in Harrodsburg named Berea. Is it a family cemetery? A cemetery located in the country? Most of my researches have been restricted to Spring Hill and at Old Mud Meeting House as these are the two locations where most of my ancestors by the name of Vanarsdall/Van Arsdale rest.

It was good hearing from you.

Oops! I almost forgot to mention Mercer County. Sorry!!!

Yes, Berea Cemetery is actually a church cemetery located near Rose Hill, Kentucky a few miles outside of Harrodsburg. It sits at the top of a hill, and is a beautiful country church. Many of my relatives are buried there, and I have visited it many times. Berea is located very near to Bruner's Chapel where many others from Mercer County are buried.

John Mattingly's death certificate says burial in Berea Cemetery, Harrodsburg. My mother took a photo of the tombstone and just identified it as "Harrodsburg cemetery." That's all I know about it. Thanks for your interest.

Hi Jane,

I would wager my last penny that the obituary for Eliza Barnett can be found on microfilm (and Copied) at theMercer County/Harrodsburg Public Library. The library has microfilmed all, if not most, issues of the Harrodsburg Herald which is printed once a week. I have found most of the obituaries that I have searched for through this resource. Do you live a good distance from Harrodsburg? I don't know whether the staff at the library would look this up for you or not but I have always found them to be very helpful and accomadating. The records for Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg do list the name of Miss Eliza Barnett. Born in Garrard County, Kentucky of January 15, 1864, and died in Harrodsburg on April 27, 1952. Her parents are listed as being Dudley Barnett and Malinda Hale. Eliza is buried in section L, lot 35, grave 10. This is the extent of the information that I have availabe.
Good Luck,
Don Van Arsdale

My grandfather was George Dogged Corn. His mother was Serina Cornish (born 1847). Her parents were William P. Cornish and Margaret Cornish. Also, there is a very small town near Harrodsburg named Cornishville. Although there may be connection to Mercer County, all of the relatives I have mentioned were from Washington County.

Mercer County is about as far back as I have been able to go.

I have been in contact with League families in Va,.Ohio, Ala, etc but have not been able to get beyond George.

My Dad's Grandfather was John Thomas League. I found a marriage record for him and his wife Lucinda Angeline Humfleet. However can not find anything else to document his being.

Have heard from my family that John Thomas died young, age 34, and left Lucinda Angeline League with a fairly large family to raise. My grandfather was somewhere about 12.

Never really got into genealogy until after Grandpa died so I never ask the right questions.

Grandpa died in 1964.

After I started digging up family I ask at our family reunion what they knew about John Thomas and all said "he died young"

I will be in Kentucky the end of the month for the reunion. However the reunion is my Dad's brothers and sisters and their families. My Dad is the oldest of 9 and he is 80.

I haven't been able to do any serious research for the past three years except on-line. I hope to have the time to get into some real work while I am there.

Joyce

Samuel League, son of Alexander League and Sally Ann Coffman/Kaufman, married Josephine Bruner.

If you check the census, etc you will find the family name spelled several different ways.

Leek
Leige
In one census I found Samuel listed as head of house LEIGE listed as Day laborer, wife named Josie seamstress. Listed in household was Coobert, Molly, step daughter,Ellen Stepdaughter and Charley Leige son.

In another census I found Sam listed as San Legue listed as day laborer bording with Robert Driscal.

Ky Vital Statistics list the spelling as Leag for Sally Ann, Lula and William Preston (family of Nancy Newton League

Also in Boyle Co. Jno Logue is listed as bondsman for his sister who married Henry Sanders. My Dad had an aunt and uncle named Henry and Janie Sanders. I assume John League was the person listed as bondsman.

STILL searching for grandfather Chilton Moss (m. Lucy Templemon). They were from VA, he was killed in Battle of River Raisin, War of 1812. Lucy married J. Doneghy a couple of years later. She and Chilton had 2 daughters - Amelia (m. Abraham Irvine)(my grandmother) and Lucinda (m. Gabriel Caldwell - they are also grandparents on another line). Hope somebody can help - don't think Chilton lived in KY for more than 3 years, but maybe somebody has him in their line also. Here's hoping...

Ann,
Several of us are researching the Charles Craig and Nancy Graham line. We believe that Samuel and Mary Ann (Sharp) Craig had one known son, Harvey Craig b.1820 Mercer Co., Ky., dc 1881, md. Nov 27, 1843 Mercer Co. to Mary Jane Carter. Can you prove or disprove this? Did Samuel and Mary Craig have other children?

Hi Pat,
Unfortunately I know very little about Cornelius C. Vanarsdall. Most of my searches have been directed along the lines of Cornelius O. Vanarsdall. As you no doubt know, both "C" and "O" are buried at the Old Mud Meeting House Cemetery in Mercer County. I have an e-mail "pen pal" who I believe is quite an authority regarding Cornelius C. Her name is Linda, and her address is linhayes@interl.net. I suspect that Linda would be quite pleased to hear from you, and that she may be able to provide you with some meaningful information. Good luck and happy hunting!

Family oral history says that James had a brother, William, who had red hair. It also says that their father was James Downing who was b. in Ireland abt 1730. This same source says James Sr. immigrated to America with seven brothers.
