Linda -

The will of Harman Vanderipe appears in a typescript book in the Family History Library in Salt Lake, Mercer Co., KY Wills and Estates Vol 1-2, 1786-1808 and 1808-1821, call number 976.9485, P28f, v.1-2. This will is from Will Book 6 p. 293, recorded Aug 1820.

He lists his wife Catey, dau Magdalen Huff, son Cornelius Vanderipe, Dau Altie, wife of Abraham Vanarsdel, and grandson John Vanarsdel, (a.k.a. John Vanderipe). Abraham Vanarsdel and Peter Huff were executors and witnesses.

Could this Abraham be a sibling to your John C. Vanarsdall? I am guessing that since Pat Durham indicates that John C. Vanarsdall married Mary Vanderipe, and then married Cynthia Vandivier, that Mary was a daughter of Harmon Vanderipe, but she was no longer living when this will was created 1 Jan 1819.

And if a group sheet I obtained from Ancestral File is correct, the Mary(Polly)Westerfield who married Cornelius Vanderipe was a sister of James Cozine Westerfield, and the Mary(Polly)Westerfield who married Cornelius C. Vanarsdall was the daughter of James Cozine Westerfield. Is this correct?

Partially correct.

James Cozine Westerfield did have a sister, Mary (Polly) Westerfield. However, Cornelius C. Vanarsdall did not marry a Mary (Polly) Westerfield. Cornelius C. Vanarsdall married (1) Mary Vanderipe and (2) Cynthia Vandivier. Mary (Polly) Westerfield, daughter of James Cozine Westerfield married John C. Vanarsdall. John C. Vanarsdall is the son of Cornelius C. Vanarsdall and Mary Vanderipe. I have no idea if Abraham Vanarsdall is the sibling of John C. Vanarsdall. I do have a copy of the will of Harman Vanderipe.

Lynda,
Perhaps we can help one another.

I am seeking information about Margaret A. Singleton, b May 1824; d 1902 Cedar hills, Dallas Co, Tx. Margaret and her husband Milton A. Merrifield/etc is listed in the 1850 Cen of Dallas/Cook Co, Tx. They married ca 1840 in Mercer or Jessamine Co.

Margaret is given as the d/o Daniel & Catherine Hawkins Singleton. Daniel b 26 Nov 1795 Fayette/Jessamine Co, Ky. Got this data from ancesty.com & needs to be proven. In the data Margaret's husband is Milton A. Merrifield & I can not find a record of him in Nelson, Hardin, Jefferson, Shelby, Washington Cos. So-o am looking further afield now.

Genealogy is given for Margaret A. Singleton: pts Daniel & C
Catherine Hawkins Singleton. cS/o Edmond & Margaret Hayden Singleton. d/o John & Nancy Withers Hawkins.

Milton Merrifield is given as a s/o John Merrifield & Sarah Welsh Merrifield. Sarah Welsh, d/o John & Sarah Withers Welch/Welsh who married in Fayette Co.supposidly. It is John Merrifield that I have a problem with. Merrifield researchers says he is s/o Alexander Hamilton Merrifield & Rachael Boone (m 1787 Jefferson Co). I say he is the son of John "The Shaker" & Priscilla Davis who m 1788 Nelson Co and that is a whole differnt story But time will tell!!!

Anyway, a William Jefferson Merrifield was killed at Goliad (s/o Alex'r & Rachel-I think!). Sarah Welsh Merrifield died in Mercer Co in 1832;is buried with a dau Sally A. Kerrieild & another Sarah Merrifield of the age to be the siter of John. John married #2 Elizabeth Forman 1834 in Spencer Co. By 1851/52 this ccuple is in Dallas Co, Tx with Milton & Margaret Singleton Merrifield & his brother William Merrifield (who m just before the 1850 Cen of Dallas Co, Ts.

I lack the dates, cem. records for Sarah Welsh Merriield who d 1832 Mercer Co; daughter died just before her or just just after & am not sure of the other Sarah's death date either!!! I guess I am grasping at straws.

I just thought that your James Hawkins Singleton might be a brother to Margaret A. Singleton. I have no listing at all of possible borthers or sisters and the "old" Merrifield research pspers does not give dates, places & sometimes what is given- I have proved to be incorrect in places. Have substantiated much & added dates but Milton & Margetet Singleton Merrifield have eluded all my searching so far.

Will check out Jessamine & Fayette Cos and see what I can find there. The Singleton file only gives Ky as a place for Daniel's death 9 Sep 1836-Mercer, Jessamine, Fayette ???

IF you haven't guessed by now, I am a Merrifield Family researcher who is trying to put the family all together. I have never had any data on the Singletons & don't know what i will find!!!

Would love to hear from you.

I am looking for information about a BROWN family: James H. Brown (middle name may be Henry), and, a possible brother, J. S. Brown. James was born in Mercer Co. in 1824. Unable to find him on 1850 census - may have moved to Missouri? James was a wagon train captain/guide on the Oregon Trail. He settled in Oregon in 1852. J. S. Brown was in Arcadia, Kan, for a while. James H. Brown named his children, Elizabeth, Emily, Thomas, William, Hank, and Archie. If any of these names sound familiar, please contact me!

Does any helpful soul know the parents of Isabella Veatch Baker (b.ca 1800)?? She md Hamilton Gritton on Oct 31, 1833 in Mercer County, KY; known children were Cyrus F., John R., William and Mary. In view of her apparent age at the time of her marriage to Hamilton, it seems probable that Veatch was Isabella's maiden name -- in that case I'd also be very interested in identifying her Baker husband. Thanks!

Robards/Roberts family
Surnames: ROBARDS, ROBERTS#02511
Bill Long <wlong39059@aol.com> Sun, 24 Sep 2000
A Robards family migrated from Mercer Co KY or perhaps Madison to Boone /Howard County Mo area about mid 1820s with 9 yr old son Jesse Robards. Family members say the father came to US early 1800s. His parents were a Lord and Lady Robards. He allegedly married to full blooded Indian girl in Kentucky. She lived to be 113 yrs old.
Trying to identify the particular Robards family that came to Mo from KY. In later years in Missouri they were known as Roberts, although they occasionally used Robards. The son Jesse married in 1839 under the name Robards but showed up later as a Roberts. May have gone from Mercer to Madison then MO?

Looking for descendants of Henry DeShazer and Keziah Williams who married in Cumberland Co., VA in 1788. Keziah likely died in VA, but Henry migrated to Mercer Co. before 1830. Children included Abraham (no further info except that he was named as an heir of Henry in Aug 1843), Nancy Ann who married Richard Holt in 1806, Prince Edward Co., VA. The Holts migrated to KY and then to MO. John W. De Shazer married Sally A. Middleton, 1823, Charlotte Co., VA and remained in VA. Last daughter Permelia married John Hazelwoodin 1827, Lincoln Co., KY. Permelia was born between 1794-1804, predeceased her father and might be the child of Henry's second wife, Elizabeth.

Knowing I had a Veatch that married into my line, I searched for the names of this couple in www.familysearch.org. There are 3 entries for Hamilton Gritton, including one from a relatively new resource called the Pedigree Resource File. The information includes his marriage in Mercer Co, KY, and quite a bit more. If you for some reason can't access this, ask me for the details. It also gives the name of the submitter, who may be able to help more.

Just started researching the Sallee line but according to what I've found so far Reynard Chastain Sallee and Mary Polly Horn are the parents of Lucretia Sallee b: ca 1813. I'm assuming Polly died during or shortly after the birth of Oliver Perry Sallee in ca 1826. A Mercer Co marriage record cites the marriage of Reynard and Sarah Kittinger Peavler (her second marriage also)as 28 Nov 1827.

Hope this helps.

Linda,

This is interesting! Was your KEZIAH WILLIAMS' maiden name PURDUM? I have a Keziah Purdum, b. c. 1800 who m. Samuel Williams c. 1828 in Montgomery Co., Maryland. I know the dates sound wrong, but could 2 different Keziah's be related somehow? My line of reasoning is this: There was a Marcus Purdom (sp. Purdom) in the vicinity of Mercer Co. who was b. late 1700's, and came from North Carolina. I have been trying to connect up the North Carolina Purdoms to the Maryland and Virginia Purdums. You have a Keziah who ended up in So. KY, and I have a Keziah, in Maryland. My Purdum ancestors ended up in Northern Kentucky. I will be glad to exchange what information I have. Does this make sense?? Barb

I don't have a lot on these three people, but I would need more information to answer you.

My Robert b. abt 1822, Allen b. abt 1852 or 53, James b. abt 1855. As far as I know Robert was born in Ky, Allen in Indiana and James may have been born in Indiana.
From about the age of 12 Robert lived in Indiana as far as I am aware of. The above Allen and James is probably sons of Robert (this has not been verified).

If any connection please get back in touch with me. I am very much interested in getting infromation on Allen and or his son Robert(Robert has not been verified yet)

Your William was a son of Henry, the Rev War pensioner who lived in Mercer Co., KY. Census years place his birth about 1808, if correct. He might be a child of Keziah Williams DeShazer, but I think it is more likely he was a child of Henry's second wife, Elizabeth. I haven't found her maiden name and suspect they may have married in Buckingham Co., VA, which is a burned county. She only outlived Henry by a few months, as her estate was probated shortly after his.

I do not know much about David Casey, but I can tell you that Elizabeth WHOBERRY (or Whobrey, the modern spelling) was born in about 1799 in Mecklenburg Co., VA, to John WHOBREY and Sarah BUGG. John was, for a time, the postmaster of Mecklenburg. John died in about 1806 and, after Sarah remarried, the family moved to Mercer Co., KY. Elizabeth's Whobrey grandparents were Jacob Whobrey and Elizabeth "Betty" . I can go into more detail about each of these people, if you like.

Do you have any idea if David and Elizabeth (Whobrey) Casey had children? stayed in the Mercer Co. area? Also, what information do you have about the Casey line?
