Mrs. Kate Edelen Goddard Surnames: BREWER, EDELEN, GODDARD, MCCORD, TARKINGTON #00423 Deb Shillo <jjshow@nem.net> Thu, 18 Jan 2001 GODDARD - Harrodsburg - Mercer Co.
The sudden death of Mrs. Kate Edelen Goddard, wife of Mr. R. E. Goddard Tuesday has saddened the community and many join the family in their sorrow. Her health had not been normal for a number of years, and it was known by those closest to her that the summons might come any time, but she seemed so much better that her passing was a shock. Apparently as well and cheerful as usual, a cerebral hemorrhage came without warning, rendering her unconscious and she died a short time afterward, just following the noon hour. Mrs. Goddard was a descendant of aristocratic lineage, prominent in Kentucky for generations. She was the daughter of the late Leonard Edelen and Mary Tarkington Edelen, and possessed many lovable traits of character. Her graciousness and kindness to everyone was very marked, as was her uncomplaining cheerfulness in the face of ill health that limited her activities in her home and church, and her social life. Her funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence on Beaumont Avenue, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Carpenter, of the United Presbyterian church, of which she had long been a member. Rev. T. Hassell Bowen, of the Christian church will take part in the service. Burial at Spring Hill cemetery. Surviving are her husband, Mr. R. E. Goddard, and the following children: Mrs. Al McChord, of Lebanon; Mrs. Lawrence C. Brewer, of Lexington; Miss Mary Goddard, Harrodsburg, and Mr. W. W. Goddard, who is in business in Birmingham, Ala., and who arrived home yesterday. She also leaves one grandchild, little Bobbie Brewer, and a brother, Mr. Allan Edelen, of this place.

Mrs. Mary Tarkington Edelen Surnames: EATON, EDELEN, GODDARD, MCMILLAN, SHUTTLEWORTH, TARKINGTON #00426 Deb Shillo <jjshow@nem.net> Thu, 22 Feb 2001 Death date July 16, 1911 EDELEN
After a lingering illness of more than four months duration, which she
bore with an unfaltering Christian fortitude, Mrs. Mary Tarkington Edelen;
wife of Mr. Leonard G. Edelen, died at the home of Mr. And Mrs. R.E. Goddard
in Harrodsburg yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, where she was removed
last Wednesday in the hope that the change would be of benefit. It has been
realized for weeks that the end was near at hand and her death was not
unexpected. As had been her lifelong wish, often expressed, death came
peacefully. To the husband, children and other relatives who are left to mourn the
loss of a devoted wife and mother, and to the friends who knew and loved her
for her many amiable qualities and her deeds of unostentatious charity, the
condolence and sympathy of the community is extended and the consolation is
offered that she left to them the priceless legacy of a well-spent life, an
example that is worthy of their emulation, and a name that will be fragrant
with the flowers of memory.Mrs. Edelen was born and reared at the Shuttleworth place, near town on
the Lebanon Pike, and was a daughter of the late William Tarkington. She
was in the sixty-ninth year of her age, and a remarkable coincident is the
fact that today marks the fifty-first anniversary of the marriage of Mr. And
Mrs. Edelen. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian church
practically all her life, and was noted for her deeds of kindness in cases
where real need existed. The remains were removed from Harrodsburg to the late residence, corner
Broadway and Fourth Street, yesterday evening and the funeral took place at
the residence this afternoon at 3 o’clock, followed by interment in Bellevue
cemetery. The funeral was conducted by Dr. E.M. Green, who had been the
pastor of the deceased for a generation.Mrs. Edelen is survived by her husband, Mr. L.G. Edelen and three
children, Mrs. R.E. Goddard, of Harrodsburg, and Mr. Allen S. Edelen, of
Burgin, and Mrs. B.L. Eaton, of Wichita, Kansas. She is also survived by
one brother and two sisters, Mr. J.M. Tarkington, of this county; Mrs. James
A. Shuttleworth, of Louisville, and Mrs. G.W. McMillan of Ackworth, Georgia.Obit from the collection of Helen & George Sandidge
