The following can be found at the URL below (Mercer Co. Genealogy's dedicated search engine):

Henry Sparrow probably applied for his ARW pension in either Washington or Marion Co. He was an affiant for the application of James Clark in Mercer Co., his deposition being made in Washington Co. at the time. Says he served with James Clark and grew up in the same county with him. I don't have a record of Henry applying for a pension in Mercer Co., but he was listed as a veteran in the 1840 Mercer Co. census.

You should check Sandi Gorin's Ky TIPS board

http://cgi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Tips

She lists the ARW soldier for each county. You'll have to look for the tip that includes Washington or Marion County, or better yet, do a "county search" on that board for the name "Sparrow".

Also ..... you inquired about Henry's sons Thomas and Henry Jr. and their service in the Civil War. Again, please check the Search Engine (link below) ..... you'll find Henry in the 9th Cavalry. No listing yet for a Thomas, but I'm sure it's coming. We're working our way numerically through the regiments. It's only a matter of time before he's listed.

According to "Bury Me At Dixville" by Jack Dalton Bailey (1983-1985); page 114:

Sarah Bugg [3/16/1750 - 1822] m. ca. 1768 William Bilbo [5/25/1747 - 6/12/1822]

Sarah was the d/o John and Susanna Frances Burleson Bugg of Cumberland Co., Va (then Henrico Co., then Chesterfield Co.)

William and Sarah Bilbo moved to Mercer Co. Ky. and had the following children: Archibald, John, Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Rebekah, and Tabitha (as listed by Charles O. Bugg)

I don't see a Susanna listed, and according to "Dixville", there are some discrepancies in the information available on William and Sarah. Please use this information only as a reference point.

This book is on file at the Harrodsburg Historical Society, and photocopies of its pages can be obtained. Feel free to follow the link below if interested in contacting them.

Descendants of Jacobus and Marie (Demaree) Westervelt/Westerfield
Surnames: BRAZELTON, DEMAREE, WESTERFIELD, WESTERVELT#00645
Kris Hutchinson <mcnet@mckinleyville.net> Thu, 30 Jul 1998
<< Previous in Thread   Response >> Response >>
Sounds like we might be from the same line. Maria Demaree and Jacobus Westervelts (James Westerfield) were my 6th great grandparents. I only know of two daughters of theirs, Rebecca as you mentioned and Catherine.

Catherine married John Brazelton and Rebecca married his brother William.

As far as their immigration to Mercer Co., Ky. The only information I have is a family narrative written by a cousin of my great grandfather. He wasn't great on dates but he wrote that they came into Kentucky with other families, about sixty people. He puts a range of dates from 1774-1778, but I wouldn't completely rely on his dates. "When they arrived at the Ohio River, supposed where Pittsburg now is, they made barges and in them floated down the river to where Louisville is now situated. There they abandoned their barges and entered the forest and with object of making the nearest settlement, Harrod's Station."

Apparently they were attacked by Indians and Jacobus Westervelt was killed. The survivors made it to a fort on the Ohio falls occupied by U.S. Troops commanded by General Clark, who then went out and found at least two survivors, Jacobus' sister Elizabeth and her baby.

For more on the Demaree line I would recomment Kevin's Demarets, Demarest page at www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/5672/demarest.html
Also realize when researching Dutch lineage that they used Patronymics so searching for surnames 1600's and older is very difficult.

You also might want to check out the Brazelton homepage. There are many very helpful researchers listed there. Catherine and Rebecca Westerfield both married Brazeltons and their children married each other which explains the insanity in my line of the family! (Just kidding)

I would be very interested in which of Maria and Jacobus' children you are descended from. I know they had at least one more daughter - she married a Stafford, but that's all the info I have. Good luck in your search. Hope this helped or at least amused you.

It surely would be nice if there were real given names for the ladies, but obituaries rarely included them in those days. It was apparently considered journalistically sophisticated to give practically no information on married ladies and only initials for the men, particularly if they were farmers.

I would be most appreciative if someone could supply the missing given names -- also the parents/ancestor line for Sarah Dean.
