James Crutchfield - 1912
Surnames: ANDERSON, BEAGLE, CRUTCHFIELD, HUGHES#00280
Anne Baker <abaker@searnet.com> Sat, 06 Mar 1999

James Crutchfield - Died January 2, 1912

CENTENARIAN
Soldier of Two Wars and Witness of Many Changes Passes Away

Mr. James Crutchfield, who probably linked a longer past into the present than any other resident of Kentucky, peacefully passed into the great beyond Tuesday night at the home of Mr. William Spaulding, near Cummings' Ferry, this county.

Mr. Crutchfield was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, in 1806, and was, therefore, 106 years old. As a child of six years he remembered the music of the fife and the rattle of the drum, and saw the volunteers, his father among them, march to battle against the British red coats in the war of 1812.

He served throughout the Mexican war, and in 1861, when volunteers were called for to preserve the Union, he enlisted in the Federal army and carried a musket from the time the shot was fired at Fort Sumpter, which was heard around the world, until Lee, the peerless commander of the remnant of starved and half-clad Confederates, handed his sword to General Grant under the apple tree at Appomatox.

Mr. Crutchfield's wife died many years ago. Two children, Miss Minerva Crutchfield, of Madison, Ind., and Mr. Henry [Clay] Crutchfield survive him.

The deceased came to this county from Tennessee 72 years ago, and until the last few weeks, was in perfect health and as active as a man of sixty. The period of his years covers the larger part of the most epochal period of the history and national life of America. Nearly all the great inventions came in his day. The railway, street car, telegraph, telephone and automobile came and grew to their present great development; the dirigible balloon, aeroplane and wireless telegraphy, and all the great improvements in labor saving machines in field and factory belong to this period. He saw the subtle forces of electricity harnessed and made to serve the uses of man in multitudinous forms; he heard the voices of great singers and orators, long dead, still thrilling audiences as the grapahone (sic) duplicated their utterances, and witnessed the mimic pictures of life in action as portrayed in the picture show. But the shadows have fallen and the elements have claimed him for their own. What will the next century witness of improvement and greatness to follow! Let us hope that it will not all be along material and commercial lines through which men grow rich, imperious and sordid. "Six feet of earth make us all of one size."

From the Harrodsburg Herald, Harrodsburg, Ky. issue of January 5, 1912

Note : While the age of 106 is interesting - On the 1860 census of Mercer he gives his age as 42, 1870 age as 53, 1880 age as 62 & when he married his 2nd wife, Mrs. Zerilda (Hughes) Anderson on 12 Oct 1857 in Mercer Co., he listed his age as 38 & born in Tenn.. His first wife was Amanda Beagle who he married 28 May 1851 in Mercer Co., Ky.

W. T. Phillips - Died 16 July 1913

One of the Most Venerable Men in the Community Taken

Wednesday morning about 4 o'clock the spirit of Mr. W. T. Phillips, aged eighty-two, passed into eternal rest. This venerable man held the esteem and liking of everyone, and in spite of his age was, until a few years ago, one of the most active and successful business men of the community. He was born at Springfield, but when two or three years old was left an orphan and went to live with his aunt, Mrs. Samuel Crawford, of Boyle county. Afterward he came to Mercer to reside and married Miss Dunn, of this county.

In his young manhood he united with the Presbyterian church and has always been an upright Christian gentleman. His funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the family residence on Cane run Avenue, conducted by Dr. McLeod, assisted by Dr. J. G. Hunter, and the interment was in Springhill Cemetery beside his wife, who died some years ago.

Of the ten children in the family eight survive the father. All were here to be with him at the last except two sons who live too far away to reach here in time. The children are Mr. Fred Phillips, Colorado; Mr. Dunn Phillips, Montana; Mr. William Phillips, Michigan; Mrs. Buford Phillips and Mrs. T. E. Plyley, of Knoxville; Mrs. William Edmunds, Lebanon; Mrs. Charles Blakeman and Miss Maggie Phillips, of this city.
