Name: NORSE, WILLIAM Pension #: S6845 State: SS (Sea Service) Age: 61 Ap Date: 02 Aug 1832 NORSE, WILLIAM: Mentions his aged brother, Joseph Norse of the District of Columbia, Registrar of the Treasury of the U.S. Resided in Berkley Co., Va., at the beginning of the war. He entered the Sea Service at age 17 as a midshipman on 16 Oct 1780. On a voyage from the West Indies to Philadelphia, 16 Apr 1781, his ship was taken & he became a prisioner on a prison ship, where I suffered the most cruel treatment & with 40 others was taken to Portsmouth, Eng. prison, where we had no fire or any comforts, until the Spring of 1782 when I was sent back with about 300 others. I re-entered the service as midshipman & again captured & not released until the end of the war, with severe treatment beyong discription. (NOTE: this is a long & fascinating pension on Sea Service during the ARW) Bounty Land Warrant: 34836-160-55 Spouse: KYLE, REBECCA P. Sp. Age: 61 Sp.Ap Date: 18 May 1853 REBECCA P. KYLE: Made in Boyle Co., Ky. Rebecca P. Norse of Boyle Co., Ky., widow of William Norse, dec'd states he died 30 Feb 1836 in Mercer Co., Ky. (Now Boyle Co.). She married him, 12 May 1813, in Mercer Co., Ky. by Rev. Thomas Kyle. Affiant 1: Norse, Joseph Joseph Norse: Affidavit of Joseph Norse dated 17 Feb 1827, City of Washington, (DC). My younger brother, William Norse, was by his father, James Norse in 1780 placed under my Direction and the circumstances narrated by him in the foregoing memorial received of the attestation to their varacity, I can give them. Signed: Joseph Norse, Registrar of the Treasury. Affiant 2: Cook, Catherine B. Catherine B. Cook: 23 Jul 1832, Mrs. Catherine B. Cook, appeared in Fayette Co., Ky. aged 73 years & a resident of Lexington..She well remembers William Nourse as a mid-shipman in the Navy & was sent to England as a prisoner Other 1: Norse, James James Norse: Father of Joseph & William Norse. Name: MOORE, THOMAS Pension #: W564 State: VA Age: 78 Ap Date: 03 Sep 1832 MOORE, THOMAS: He states he was born in Frederick Co., Maryland & when about 12 years old my father moved to Monongahala about Red Stone Fort where I lived when called into service in the fall of 1777..against the Indians. Was a Capt. I am now a resident of Mercer Co., Ky & my record of my birth was destroyed by fire. Spouse: HARBERSON, ELIZABETH Sp. Age: 72 Sp.Ap Date: 23 Oct 1838 ELIZABETH HARBERSON: Elizabeth Moore, resident of Mercer Co., widow of Capt. Thomas Moore. She married sd Thomas Moore at Harberson's Fort, when it was surrounded by Hostil Indians on the 25 Day of Mar 1782 or 3, she cannot remember the year. They were forted up at the time of their marriage & were married by John Cowan, a Magistrate. Shortly after they married, James Harberson was killed inside the fort by a party of Indians, Her husband, immediately mounted as many men as could be spared from the fort and went in persuit of them and was absent for sometime, but failed to overtake them. Thomas Moore died 23 Feb 1835, on 23 Aug 1838..she said she was 72 in August last. Affiant 1: Ray, James, General General James Ray: 03 Sep 1832..a neighbor of Thomas Moore & served with him several tours. Affiant 2: Moore, John, Sr. John Moore Sr.: 03 Sep 1832..A citizen of Mercer Co., Ky and a neighbor of Thomas Moore. We both enlisted at the same time, Affiant 3: Westerfield, James C James C. Westerfield: He is well aquainted with Elizabeth Moore, widow of Capt. Thomas Moore. Mrs. Moore's oldest child if now living would be over 50. He has always heard from the old settlers that they married in 1782 & that James Harberson was killed in that year. Affiant 4: Moore, Thomas H. Thomas H. Moore: Taken at his house in Mercer Co., Ky on 23 Oct 1838..He is the 8th child of Thomas Moore, dec'd & Elizabeth Moore. He will be 43 on the 12th of August next. Affiant 5: Wilson, Hannah Hannah Wilson: Deposition taken in Green Co., Ky. 19 Nov 1838, she is age 75. She is well aquainted with Thomas Moore, Dec'd of Mercer Co & Elizabeth Harberson (before marriage) & was at their wedding which took place in Harberson Station, then in Lincoln Co., Ky. & now in Mercer Co., Ky in 1782 & my aquaintance has been kept up ever since. He was born in Frederick Co., Maryland & when very young went with my father to the western part of Pa, near the Monogahala River on Muddy Creek..the place we lived was in dispute between Pa & Va, when the line was run we were in Pa & I lived about 10 miles above Red Stone Old Fort, now Brownsville..was called into service when the ARW first commenced...service against the Indians..at one time he was a guard with his father. Mentions "my brother Thomas Moore" & I served together. I was taken prisoner by the Wyandott Indians & taken to Detroit & kept by the Indians until I escaped in Aug of 1782, during that time I was permited to go out and hunt with the warriors. I was taken with them on a expedition intended for the stations in Kentucky (which became the Battle of Blue Licks) I continued with them in the hopes of making my escape. On the 2nd night after reaching Wheeling, another prisoner named Benjamin Kelly & I made our escape & reached the neighborhood of Washington, called Catfish Camp. I have never received any pay or land for my services. I removed to Ky from Monongahala in late 1783 where I now live. Affiant 1: Moore, Thomas, Sr Thomas Moore Sr.: 3 Dec 1832. Thomas Moore, Sr., brother of John Moore..served together until his brother was taken by the Indians & did not return to his friend until the fall of 1782 Affiant 2: VanMeter, Jacob Jacob VanMeter: No date. He is age 80 & a residnet of Hardin Co., Ky. & he is well aquainted with John Moore, Sr., & testifies as to his service. From old age & hardships of life I am now totally disabled from performing manual labor myself, but have to depend upon the labor of my son who is about to leave me, as his 2 oldest brothers have already done to work and shift for themselves. Spouse: Susannah Shutt Sp. Age: 76 Sp. Ap. Date: 24 Sep 1838 Susannah Shutt: She is the widow of Peter Joran who was on the pension Roll. She married Peter Jordan in 1786 about 2 o3 3 weeks before Chirstmas in Frederick Co., Va. on the Waters of Cedar Creek, not far from General Zane's Iron Works. Her husband died 2 Aug 1824 in Mercer Co., Ky. Affiant 1: Col. Abraham Bowman Col. Abraham Bowman: He commanded the 8th Va.Regiment in 1776 & he was aquainted with Peter Jordan & says his service as stated by Peter Jordan is correct. Affiant 2: Peter Jordan Peter Jordan: Justice of the Peace for Mercer Co., Ky. states in 1838, that Mrs. Susanna Jordan is his aunt & they moved from Va. to Ky about 1798. Affiant 3: Mary Disponette Mary Disponette: 24 Sep 1838..Mrs. Mary Disponette, states she is the oldest child of Susannah & Peter Jordan dec'd & she was born in Oct or Nov 1787 & is now 51 years old & well remembers her parents and family moving from frederick Co., Va. in the fall of 1797 & landed in Ky about May 1798 & settled on the Salt River in Mercer Co where my father lived until the date of his death on 2 Aug 1824 & my mother, Susannah Jordan, still lives there. Affiant 4: John M. Jordan John M. Jordan: 24 Sep 1838..from the best recollections of his parents he was born 1789 & is now age 49 and well recollects coming to Ky..in May of 1798 & settled in Mercer Co. My father died 2 Aug 1824. Affiant 5: Magdalen Hatfield Magdalen Hatfield: Brookville, Franklin Co., Ind..Mrs. Magdalen Hatfield, age 66, states that Susannah Jordan married Peter Jordan, now dec'd, in the fall of 1786 in Frederick Co., Va. . She is a sister of said Susannah, whose maiden name was Shutt & this deponent lived with Peter & susanna Jordan while they lived in Va for 6 or 6 years, after their marriage. That they migrated from Va. to Ky in 1798. I came to Kentucky & settled at McGary's Station and in the spring of 1781, I became a guard and Indian Spy in the Va Militia .. first stated at Shawnee Run & then at Arnold's station & then at Denton's station .. marched with General George Rogers Clark against the Indians at Piqua on the Big Miami. He adds a further deposition 21 Feb 1833 in Anderson Co., Ky, aged 71 saying he also served with Isaac Shelby & Evan Shelby in 1776 & 1777 bringing provisions to Col Christian. He served until 1792 in various duties for the Va. Militia in Kentucky. Affiant 1: Gen. James Ray Gen. James Ray: 1832..have known him since Mar of 1780. He is the husband of the Lady who killed an Indian with an axe who assailed his house in the most Heroic Manner. He was a near neighbor & was often in the same service. He is a man of Truth. Affiant 2: John Gritton John Gritton: Same as General James Ray & given at the same time. Affiant 3: Anthony C. Crockett Col. Anthony Crockett: 22 Feb 1833. Given in Franklin Co., Ky. Hutton was in actual service with Shelby from 1776, escorting provisions to Col. Christian at Long Island on the Holston River, I have known him since 1780. He was a faithful officer. Affiant 4: Hannah Hutton Hannah Hutton: Letter in this file dated 11 Aug 1840..From Hannah Hutton..from Mount Vernon, Ky. She is the widow of "Henry" Hutton or Col. Hendrick Hutton. He was the brother of James Hutton, pensioner who died in Anderson Co after about 5 or 6 years of drawing a pension. She is trying to secure a pension as a widow of Col. I was drafted in the spring of 1781 from Culpepper Co., Va..my home. States he was born 25 Mar 1747 in Somerset Co., NJ and moved from there before the war to Culpepper Co., Va. I have lost my papers & know of no one except William Hedger who can prove my service. I moved to Kentucky in the fall of 1790 to Fayette Co, after living there 5 years I moved to Mercer Co., Ky where I now live. 22 Oct 1840..Thomas Hedger appeared in Parke County, Ind court: He is the same person who was on the pension rolls of Kentucky from whence he removed to & now resides in Indiana where he intends to remain & wishes his pension transferred. He has lived in Parke Co., Ind for 5 years & the reason heremoved as he has children there with whom he wishes to reside. He had intended to return to Ky but is now to imfirm. A paper in this file states he came from Kentucky to this state (Rockville, Ind) to make a visit to his daughter who lived in this county with the intention of returning but his health prevented it. Affiant 1: William Hedger William Hedger: 20 Sep 1833. I can recollect his service well..In 1791 he removed to Kentucky as I removed with him. I have been aquainted with him 58 years..he also had lived in Culpepper Co., Va. Date: 27 Jul 1833 HARLAN, GEORGE: George Harlan, appeared in Mercer Co court ,a resident of Lincoln Co., Ky resideing near the town of Danville in Mercer Co., Ky..he was 71 on 21st of June last..he enlisted at age 16 in Va at the Glades of Sandy Creek..on 7 Jan 1777. He served 3 years and removed to the State of Kentucky in the fall of 1780 & resided at Harlan's Station up the Salt River. A certain Thomas Hartley proposed that I give him my discharge he would take it to the office of Col. Richard C. Anderson at or near Louisville and on his return would tell me how I could get my land. Some years afterward, I went to Col. Anderson's office to inquire about this & when he examined his books, he informed me that the land lay upon Clear Creek in the State of Ohio and had been entered in the name of Evans, assigner of George Harlan. I went to Chilliocthe and saw Evans but got no satisfaction about my land, nor have I ever been able to obtain it.. mentions several times Jeremiah Briscoe (Major & now dec'd) who had lived also at Harlan's station & always intimate with his family until the death of Briscoe.
