"Obscure" George Brown
Surnames: BROWN, WHALEN#01536
Jim Abell <jim.abell@mciworld.com> Sat, 17 Jul 1999
Homepage: James C. Abell Home Page
George Brown was born circa 1827, not certain which county. He married Teresa Whalen circa 1848-1849. She was born circa 1822, not certain which county. Teresa was Catholic, George was not. They were counted twice in the 1850 census, both in Mercer and Marion counties. In Mercer they were listed in household of William Brown, toll booth keeper, and his wife Sarah. But these were probably not George's parents due to ages. George was either a stone mason or belonged to the Order of Masons. George and Teresa were parents of Mary Ann Brown, b.1850 in Washington county, and Frances B. Brown, b.1852 in Marion county. George died between 1852 and 1860. He and Teresa were said to have once lived in "Ravina", which is supposed to have been in Mercer county. Anyone have a clue as to who were George Brown's parents?

I descend from Joseph DEVIN's second marriage to a woman also named Elizabeth, but I have no last name for her. My line starts from their child Elizabeth Peyton DEVIN, whom later went on to mary her father's ex-wife's brother's son. That one is hard, but my family history twines like that! Email me if you need more info, or more explanation. I would
like to know the last name of Joseph Devin's second wife.

Searching for family of Aaron BREWER, born circa 1785, married 1812/1815, to Mary McFARLAND, though family "legend" says their daughter Mary BREWER was born before their marriage.
Also searching for info. on Levi HOUSE, born circa 1755. He was in Mercer Co. in 1790's. Is he the same Levi HOUSE whose father was John Valentine HOUSE of the Potomac River, and the same Levi who later lived in Indiana? James HARROD would have been his step-uncle.

Ransdell/Ransdall
Surnames: RANSDALL, RANSDELL#01544
Brian Fuller <bfull1117@aol.com> Wed, 21 Jul 1999
I'm having trouble locating info on my Shelton Ransdell (or Ransdall)
who was 37 years of age and living in Bourbon Co. (Centerville) in 1880.
I cannot find him in the 1870 census when he would have been listed with
wife Susan McDonald and children Ida and Lulu. I cannot locate him in
the 1860 census either.

I've assumed he was born in Bourbon Co. based on the information on his
daughters death certificate but am beginning to doubt.

There are many Ransdell/Ransdall families in Owen, Henry and Mercer
Counties. Could these families be related and my ancestor moved to
Bourbon Co. on his own?

Any information on this mystery would be appreciated.

George Conner

Kimberley Berry <kimmb_@yahoo.com> Thu, 22 Jul 1999
I am looking for ANY information regarding my extremely hard-to-track-down ancestor GEORGE CONNER. All I can find out is that he was married in MERCER County on 24 August, 1798 to ELIZABETH LUDWICK and that he died sometime before 1822. I am *desperate* for info regarding his parentage, as we're in the process of trying trace the family back to the original country (Ireland?), and we keep hitting dead ends at his name. Thanks so much.

Ed Adams has lots of history on what is probably your Adams-Clark family from Mercer Co.,KY. His e-mail address is edadams@earthlink.net. I learned the following from him. You should contact him.

There was a group of Scotch-Irish families families who moved from Botetourt Co.,VA to Mercer Co., KY in 1779-Adams,McAfees, McGees, McCouns and others (connected to Clarks). This group was known as the McAfee Company.

After settling this region, most of the group moved to Indiana along with the Nevins family to what is now Nevins Township in Vigo County and Adams Township in parke County. William Greer Adams was the first settler in Nevins Township in 1811 (aparently some of the families may have waited in Clark County before settling with the rest).

There were at least 2 Adams families in the group, one descended from Samuel Adams and Anne Adams (dau. of William I. Adams b. ca.1717 in Antrim, Ireland) and Mary Walker-who was related to the Clark family and Gen. George Rogers Clark.

I am searching for the gravesites of Capt.(Rev) Paul FROMAN and his wife, Elizabeth HITE FROMAN, both of whom died in 1783. Paul died in Lincoln Co. and Elizabeth in Mercer Co...perhaps the same county in 1783. It is my understanding that when Elizabeth died, she left a fairly large estate and homestead. I would like to know if that homeplace is still standing and, if so, where it is located.

Greenwood/Warren/Vannoy
Surnames: GREENWOOD, MERCER#01555
Karen Dale <kdale60909@asol.com> Tue, 27 Jul 1999
I am looking for the family of GREENWOODS found in this 1850 census index for Lafayette Co. MO. I have reason to believe that the family came from Mercer Co. KY

GREENWOOD Daniel F. 47 KY

Winford [Winifred WARREN] 41 KY

William W. 14 MO

Susan E. 12 MO

Sarah 10 "

George B. 8 "

Daniel F. 6 "

Edward 4 "

Elanor 83 b. NC

Harrison R. 37 KY
VANOY Harriet 25

I find Greenwoods, Vannoys and Warrens in all the early Mercer Co. census records, including a MIMROD GREENWOOD (1810, 1820) who is also found in later MO census records. I find a Harriet Vannoy in the 1870 census record for Mercer, though Harriet married in MO 1872. I find a marriage for a CORNELIUS VANNOY to a JANE GREENWOOD 1822 in Mercer Co. There is a Daniel Greenwood listed in the 1840 census for both Mercer and Lafayette Co. MO. I would appreciate any information on these families to determine whether my Missouri family fits here in Mercer.

Desperately seeking any information on Goldman Powell, son of Charles Powell
/ Leah Goldman. What we know is Goldman was born in 1817 in Mercer Co. or
Washington Co. KY, married Mary Ann Hardin June 06, 1841, Washington Co. KY.
Since we find no record of Goldman Powell in KY on the 1850 census index, we
feel he left the area before 1850. He may have went to MO. He may have had
a second name (Charles? like his father) or a nickname and started using
this other name. With such an unusual name, we are at a loss as to why we
can not find this man. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks,
Fleta Powell Aday
