Thomas Kyle, Mercer Co., KY. c 1833 Surnames: KYLE #01601 Scott Kyle <scottk13@hotmail.com> Sun, 29 Aug 1999 My ancestor Thomas Kyle received his ARW pension while living in Mercer County, Kentucky. He fought at Bunker Hill, crossed the Delaware with Washington, fought several other ARW battles and was an indian scout. He ended up a clergyman in Mercer County. I'm trying to find his ancestors which I suspect could be from Pennsylvania, and then from Ireland or Scotland. His papers and money were all lost in a house fire, so I'm having problems finding a link to his past. I'd be thankful for any leads.

CANNON / CHAMPION Surnames: CALDWELL, CANNON, CHAMPION, DAVIS, HARDIN #01603 Jan Lund <genhelp@worldnet.att.net> Wed, 01 Sep 1999 Looking for descendants of the CHAMPION / CANNON families that were in Mercer County, KY in the late 1790's. My John CHAMPION married Mary "Polly" CANNON in Mercer 13 November 1794. I have found John CHAMPION, Sr. in Berkeley County, WV and a Joseph CHAMPION there also.
John CHAMPION died in 1811 and the will was administered by his long-time friend, James DAVIS, son of John DAVIS. It is also signed by Henry HARDIN who married Mary DAVIS, John DAVIS' sister. Don't know who William T Caldwell is who also signed.
After John died, Mary CHAMPION migrated with her family to Crawford County, Indiana, where her daughter, Ruth CHAMPION, married William McMURTRY.
They then migrated to Henderson, Knox County, Illinois where they lived until their deaths. Have pictures of their headstones.
Here is an outline of the family and I hope somebody sees a connection!!! Love to correspond with you...thanks, Jan Lund

ARMSTRONG-VA-KY-IN Surnames: ARMSTRONG, DEER, WILSON #01606 Mary Rynerson Gillot <mgillot@aol.com> Thu, 02 Sep 1999 << Previous in Thread Hello John,
I've read your Armstrong queries awhile back and wasn't sure if there could be a connection, but now I think maybe there is. This pertains to the query you made Mon. 17 Jan 1999 which mentioned James ARMSTRONG marrying Nancy Wilson, and not your recent query.
A cousin told me our 2nd ggrandfather Abram ARMSTRONG's mother was a WILSON. In the 1860 census for Union Twp., Johnson Co., IN., there is listed a "Nancy" who is 70 years old, living with Abram and his family. Do you have Nancy's dob or dod?I have learned a little more about Abram/Abraham since my query in November 1998. Some info is in the LDS website and some I received from my cousin.
Abram Derias? ARMSTRONG was b. 30 May 1813 in Madison Co., VA; m. 7 Aug. 1837 in Stanford, Lincoln Co., KY to Emily "Emma" DEER; d. 7 Jul 1881 in Johnson Co., IN; bur. in DEER Cem., Union Twp., Johnson Co., IN.
Emily "Emma" DEER was b. 22 Mar. 1815 in Madison Co., VA; d. 6 Oct. 1900, Johnson Co., IN; bur. in DEER Cem.
Abram and Emily's first child was born in Mercer Co., KY--John H. ARMSTRONG, b. 13 Nov. 1838; d. 15 Sept. 1841 in Johnson Co., IN; bur. DEER Cem. They settled in Union Twp. bet. 1838 & 1842 because their 2nd child, my gr. grandfather Thomas Wesley ARMSTRONG was born in Johnson County 5 Feb 1842; d. 1 Oct 1918; married my great grandmother Mary Catherine SELCH in Johnson Co., IN on 19 Oct 1868.
Could your James ARMSTRONG (b. 1817) be a brother of Abram; and James ARMSTRONG and Nancy WILSON be their parents???
Waiting to hear from you.
Mary Gillot

McDonald/Armstrong line Surnames: ARMSTRONG, MCDONALD #01611 Ken Armstrong <khafamily@efortress.com> Mon, 06 Sep 1999 << Previous in Thread I have info on three brothers Capt. John, William, and Lanty
(sons of William and Susssanna Blyth). All were born in Scotland although I have only been able to locate info on William jr born 27 Aug 1733, Canonbie District, Dumfries Cty, Scotland. William the father was born in 1699. The three brothers emigrated (year unknown) through Philidelphia. They resided a short time in Lancaster, PA then in Virginia and finally were amongst the first settlers in Mercer Cty, KY. I only show John's marriage to Priscilla so I am very interested in any additional info regarding Catherine. Interestingly though, I show William married to a Catherine, surname unknown. I wonder if my records may be incorrect. I will go reread a good family history called Armstrongs of the Catawba located in the LDS Church's Family History Library in Salt Lake. It has a chapter on this family. I appreciate any insights you have. Thanks.Top | Surname Index | Researchers Page | 'Every Word' Search | Archived Data | Home

Sallee, Peavler, Horn Surnames: BURNS, HORN, PEAVLER, SALLEE, WHITTINGHILL #01617 Rain Smith <rainbow@clover.net> Thu, 09 Sep 1999 << Previous in Thread Response >> Response >> Response >> Website listed has lots of Mercer County KY surnames Sallee, Peavler, Whittinghill data. Check all three, they married each others' siblings a lot. I have a biography listing Shateen (Chastain) Sallee married to Elizabeth Burns, whose daughter Lucretia Salle (b.1816) married Robertson Whittinghill.
I also have Reynard Chastain Salle married to Mary (Polly) Horn in 1810. Then Reynard Chastain Salle married to Sarah Peavler on 28 Nov 1827 with 5 children.
I dont know if those two men are the same person, or if they are, whether Elizabeth Burns or Mary Horn is Lucretia's mother.
I hope to be able to get to some census' older than 1850 to check. Let me know if this is any help, or you need to know more.

Margaret Key Surnames: BEST, CLAUNCH, KEY #01625 Albert J Wheat <ajwheat@aol.com> Sun, 12 Sep 1999 << Previous in Thread Response >> Linda, I just came across your query referencing Margaret Key while searching Mercer County in Rootsweb.
I am wondering whether Margaret Key is not Margaret Claunch who married my g-grandgfather David P. Key after his first wife died in 1899.
He already had grown children and was about 45 when his first wife died. We know he then married a margaret Claunch, but know nothing more about her. Possibly she had been married to a Claunch and had children by this name.
Very little is known of the Keys except that they lived in the area of Deep Creek in Mercer County and near Bruners Chapel. The last of the Key line I know married a Best and had a son who still lives near Deep Creek.
Do you see possible connection with your Margaret Key and my Margaret Claunch Key? Do you know anything at all about the Keys of the Mercer/Washington Co. Area?
Jack
